I seem to be weeping oil from the rear of the head. Not enough to cause a massive leak, but enough to cover the back of the engine and cause it to drip oil all over the drive after a while. Its an annoyance more than a serios problem.
Would it be safe enough to give the studs another 45-90 degrees of tightening?

I wouldnt risk it assuming they are at the correct torque now.
Last thing you want is a snapped head bolt

Crack on, what's the worse that can happen. There stretch bolts as you know so they're not likely to snap.

Daniel - definitely not rocker cover, athough there is a very small leak at the vacuum pump.
I did the headgasket a few years ago and i was thinking maybe i didnt torque them up correctly at the time.

Guarantee you it'll be the Vac pump...
It drips down onto the head gasket line, runs along it, then drips down the back of the engine... I've had this loads of times, once it starts I've never managed to stop the bastard leaking!

Some early XUD7s and NA XUD9s didn't use stretch bolts, but the vast majority of XUD9TEs do.
And with the vac pump - try new seals, Peugeot/Citroen will have them in stock, they're odd sizes, sometimes work, but as said, once it usually starts, you usually can't stop the bastard.

Ring Seal - 4556 06 - £0.85
Had to buy some for my engine back along
Seems to be ok at the moment.

As said very unlikely to be weeping from the HG, the stupid vac pump flange / design is pants on the xud, ive had it cause alot of issues..normally just a constant weep, that runs down the head, then tracks along the edge of the headgasket and then down the back of the block, a little leak that normally makes for alot of mess...
Sometimesnew o rings seems to sort it, but often not, I found changing oil brands fixed it for me alot of the time, used the gulf competition 5-40 and seemed fine, but other oil would piss out..with no other changes..

No worries, I actually had to fit a VAC pump to my engine as the xantia had a cap over the end of the cam.
As Darren said, it was quite common that different types of oil seems to cause issues with seals.
I run Mobil Super 2000 for Diesel 10W40 and seems to be fine.
When you change the oil, whip the pump off, fit the two seals and refill.
See what happens.

As a little update to this;
Changed oil, filter and those 2 seals. STILL DOES IT!
Also re; retorquing head bolts i forgot to mention that i seem to get an oil like substance in the header tank.
Its actually coated the header tank with about 2/4mm of what can only be described as grease.
This was why i had thought that maybe it was the headgasket. (I did the headgasket before with a skimmed head, new bolts and new gasket). Maybe it isnt tightened down well enough? Id didnt use and angle finder when torquing them down, just went in 90 degree incremments.
Any thoughts?

How many degrees did you do the bolts ? Also did you properly properly face the deck up HARD with some sandpaper

Dave, i torqued them the specs in the haynes manual. Think the last angle tightening was 220degrees?
Yes i gave the deck a clean up with some fine abrasive paper.

I literally had to get a long flat screwdriver and drive it into the deck to remove all the shit and rust and crap, then face it up, sometimes sandpaper just polishes up the rust and then you're f*cked.

Dave i would be a bit OCD about stuff like that. It was well cleaned up before i fitted the new gasket.
I think i actually took a sharp blade to any of the more stubborn crud.

High temp gasket sealant self dispensing type worked a treat on mine with exact same symptoms just dont get it in the pump
Just put a small bead around the oring. Orings can nip when refitting so this gives you backup

What way does the oil cooler work?
Could it be weeping oil into the coolant system?
Im fairly confident it isnt the headgasket.
