What do you guys think of this: ![[Image: WP_20130809_008.jpg]](http://homepage.ntlworld.com/d.mcnair/cylinder/WP_20130809_008.jpg) ![[Image: WP_20130809_010.jpg]](http://homepage.ntlworld.com/d.mcnair/cylinder/WP_20130809_010.jpg)
...the other 3 are perfect and look like new. This cylinder had a glow plug snap off in the head, I suspect some debris has fallen into the cylinder. Middle ring was slightly stuck as well.

Would one of these DIY honing tools sort this out?

that looks pretty f*cked tbh, how deep are the grooves? look to be a bout half an mm? a honing tool would improve it, but i doubt it'd get that out totally. might be lucky that new rings would bed in, but youd have to clean that piston up too...
if it was me, i'd slap it back together, but i dont give f*ck

This, I've seen worse.

It depends how much work you are willing to put in. I'd personally hone it, new rings then slap it back together. Then take it from there

But for the cost of a replacement engine, is it worth the risk and time?

Thanks guys, I'm considering my options. I had my old man and uncle round to look at it. Between them they have built a great many engines in their time. They reckon for a standard application I would probably get away with it, but since it's getting a TD04 bolted on they agree it will need sorting before continuing. I'm looking at a good second hand block and pistons, and I'll also see what the machine shop says and weigh it up from there. This is a DHY engine, would a DHX block be a suitable donor? I can't think why not? I already have a recently reconditioned head so I'm not looking for a complete engine.

DHX engines are exactly the same bud, just a different last letter because they were out of a Citroen. They are actually more reliable than the DHY and d8A lumps.

Not entirely true mate, it's a DHX that's in my 406. At any rate, I've sourced a fully reconditioned XUD DHY bottom end from a 2001 Fiat Ducato, all for £60. Massive bargain!

I would just new ring that, get a boring kit for £15 off the bay, then a set of rings, bang some hdi rods in too, job done for less than £50 and a reliable engine. The xud tolerances are mighty compared to some engines, hence why they last so long but sound horrendous.

I had considered a honing tool, but it was debatable if it would remove enough material, or if it would, it might take a long time to get the scores out. I haven't seen piston rings for under £80, so all together the recon bottom end for £60 seems like a bargain. I will be refitting with HDI rods

As above depends how deep it is. You can still see the factory honing marks there though.

Also, if it were me, I would re-use some second hand rings, now I know lots of people would disagree with me, but when people literally cant give engines away then I would feel sick spending £80 on some rings!
also as dum dum said, factory honing marks still there so the bore still has good shape, quick wip over with a honing tool would be fine.
