Are there any differences that would stop you from swapping a phase 2 ecu and related bits (bsi/rcl/keys) over to a phase 3 unit on a gti?

Would there be any difference to the connections / plugs or the mapping between them?

Yes. You wouldnt be able to fit the BSI. Just get one from the same phase mate. Makes it much easier.
