Back them up to something external? If you dont have a HDD then DVD-rs will do at a push
Or do you have a C and D partition? On my laptop, although it only has one hard drive, its split into two. When I restore it, only the stuff on C is removed, thus cleaning up the messy slow OS but not touching my data. But this may not apply to your laptop!

Reinstall windows is the obvious thing...
Run CCleaner and defragler to speed it up.

Uninstall all the crap programs you never use in control panel, "add or remove programs" bit and the shitty tool bars in your web browser.

Then run CCleaner, that can clear the temp files clogging up you computer and the registry cleaner, that will sort out the background stuff.

After CCleaner run the defragler.

Since using CCleaner on my computers I've never had to wipe clean a computer and start from fresh to get it running sweet.

I've done a little guide for you.

So once you've downloaded CCleaner from that link and installed it just do the following.

First uninstall the programs you don't use and the ones that you might of installed that were free trials.
 ![[Image: 01programandfeatures_zpsc867cc5f.png]](http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae321/Dee_306/computer/CCleaner/01programandfeatures_zpsc867cc5f.png)
So go to control panel and select "Programs and features"
 ![[Image: 02selectprogram_zps4d036005.png]](http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae321/Dee_306/computer/CCleaner/02selectprogram_zps4d036005.png)
Uninstall a program at a time. So right click on the program you want to get rid off and select uninstall and then follow the short wizard.

Once you've got rid of the programs you don't need start CCleaner.
 ![[Image: 03startCCleanerandanalyze_zps8434f870.png]](http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae321/Dee_306/computer/CCleaner/03startCCleanerandanalyze_zps8434f870.png)
Click Analyze
 ![[Image: 04Runcleaner_zps880cc642.png]](http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae321/Dee_306/computer/CCleaner/04Runcleaner_zps880cc642.png)
Once analysed it will give you a list of things it'll be deleting. Have a quick look at this list to make sure you're happy with the bits to be deleted. Then click run cleaner.
 ![[Image: 05Registryclean_zpsc33df3b9.png]](http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae321/Dee_306/computer/CCleaner/05Registryclean_zpsc33df3b9.png)
When that's done click on the Registry tab, click Scan for issues, once scanned click Fix Selected Issues. It will then prompt you to save a back up of registry, do this.
 ![[Image: 06fix_zpsa0f9096a.png]](http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae321/Dee_306/computer/CCleaner/06fix_zpsa0f9096a.png)
Click Fix Selected Issues and then click scan for issues again because there is always some that need a second try to fix.

Now that's the CCleaner bit done.

I usually now do a full defrag. To do this go to start button, select Computer, right click on the the local drive. Click on Properties from the menu, Tools from the tab and then fragmentation now. Select the main drive and defragment disk. This might take a few hours.

That's it, good luck.

Let me know how you get on. I didn't do a guide for defragler as I've not used it be for but the windows defrag should be ok.

I've been meaning to try defragler, If I do use it I'll do the same type of guide as I've done for the CCleaner.

		Good little guide....
I've just downloaded CCleaner - my PC is about 15 months old now and shows no signs of slowing down but as there was 1.5Gb of crap in the recycle bin and I've never deleted internet history thought it might be good to clean it up anyway.
I've just analyzed it and some of the 'applications' it wants to delete seem pretty important (Microsoft Office for example)...dunno if Im just being thick here, but is there some temp files it wants to delete from the program or does it want to remove the programme itself?

Yes, it'll just be temp files in office that it wants to delete.

I've never used the restore functions in windows but don't you have to create a new restore point every time you install something new?
