It could be heating oil not red diesel as used by farmers, this has much less lubrication than red or wight diesel and can cause loads of problems long term. Either way don't get caught using it on...

I don't know if it will throw up any codes but you could unplug one at a time until you find the one thats smoking.

A little tip is to use the handle of a radiator roller, once bent to the right shape you can slide it behind the starter and locate it into the flywheel. Much easier than trying to get your hand down ...

Yep white smoke from a diesel is unburnt fuel (often seen when starting if glow plugs aren't working). I too would be looking at the injectors.
