RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Piggy - 24-10-2013

nah quite compact...its exhaust manifolds and getting downpipes to fit which could be a pain.
I foresee the exhaust tunnel will need some 'work'

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Grant - 24-10-2013

The 'exhaust' tunnel would become a transmission tunnel, and the exhausts would consequentially be run to each side of the car, one for each bank.

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Piggy - 24-10-2013

ah yeah that makes sense.
less chassis work

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Grant - 24-10-2013

Yep, less chassis work, more bwarp lol

nooo, he doesn't want any K series stuff in the 306, plus that engine is quite expensive to fix.

anyway grant, the cars looking good, id have moved the spare wheel further into the boot, also binned the standard dash and made a full blown custom one up. like what's in the caterham 7
have you thinned out the car loom and fitted a removerable boss?

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Dum-Dum - 25-10-2013

Just a thought but wouldn't it be easier to buy the RV8 engined 306 that keeps popping upon ebay and transfer the space frame and that sort of stuff across

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Ruan - 25-10-2013

Audi 2.7T V6 or 4.2 V8 - or name the engine and make an adapter plate (though for me, 3.0 or 4.0 V8 CR TDi)
Mid mounted on an Audi 01E FWD transaxle
318is rear subframe
Custom propshaft

Bonza.

Though IMHO - no point in having a RWD 306 - the wheelbase is just TOO short, you're not going to be able to drift it... So you may as well do a 4x setup - in which case still use the 01E tranny but shove the engine up front, but have a Quattro one with the Torsen centre diff and then just link it up again to your 3 series or RX8 rear subframe.

Definitely don't want anything K series!!! Avoiding that like the plague lol

The spare wheel is currently on the car, so nowhere in the back, and a fuel cell is getting welded into the floor at some point, so the wheel goes wherever there is space. I'd love to make a custom dash, but when the cage/frame is in, there most probably won't be one at all. Being a short fucker I have no need what-so-ever for a removable wheel, and it will only move the wheel further away from the stalks. The loom will be cut down when i remove the dash Smile

Good call Chris, none of the pics work Sad but i Think I can remember it. Seems a little pricey though?

Not really after a diesel though dude. The whole point of this is for maybe a little more power, but just doing something that hasn't been done, fully, and for epic noise.

With regards to drifting: It's not what I'm building this for lol

I want to keep some aspect of the 306 handling so thats why the alfa box would be great for the weight distribution.

Besides, the new fiesta is shorter than the 306 by 80mm, and Ken Bloc manages just fine Wink lol

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Ruan - 25-10-2013

Ken Block's fiesta is 4x Wink And both of the first engines are pervs!

IMHO If you're going for handling - then put the engine in the middle of the car surely?! You can get away with short wheelbases with mid engined cars, but shoving the weight outwards is only ever a bad thing...

That's just my opinion of it... If you're trying to easily fit a V8 - up front, any RWD tranny... If you're trying to make one drive OK - Mid engine, Transaxle...

Other engine you might be able to get hold of on the cheap is an early Jaguar AJ-V8... Basically the replacement for the Rover V8...

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Grant - 25-10-2013

Trying to get the engine behind the seats, then a tranny box to the rear wheels will just work out too short. I agree, in an ideal world, that would be the best thing to go for.

Front engine, RWD, as i *think* even rear engined would work out with no enough space, as I would be trying to mount a Longitudinal engine transversely. Once the gearbox is mounted it would be about 3ft outside the car lol

The Jag V8's from what I see, tend to come up at about the £1k mark no?

That's why I say transaxle Wink

Keeps it super, super short Wink

Shafts literally come out STRAIGHT behind the bell housing.

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - floz123 - 25-10-2013

Some good ideas here grant Wink did think once about putting a v8 in mine. Got it all planned out etc. Also considered a twin engine 1.8 turbo project. Have you thought of the 1uz v8? All aluminium and nearly 300hp standard Wink

Also short wheelbase can drift...just not that well Wink look at the KP starlets...short wheel base and practically started drifting. It would be awesome either way..whatever you decide. All about having a different idea and making it happen Smile

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Dum-Dum - 25-10-2013

Have you not got a V8 in this yet?

Not sorted your matrix yet Wink

So had a good productive day today.

Had to have the windscreen on the van replaced, so that meant waiting at home for the guy to show up. So in other words, car work!

I started the morning cheering myself up by seeing how much camber I can get out of my top mounts:

Standard[Image: DSC_0006_zps089850fb.jpg]

With camber:

After mucking about, I set about sorting my chronic exhaust leak(s)

First was from the fire ring, needed a new bolt as one had threaded and come loose. Easy fix.
Second was from the centre section:

So chucked a new one in there and fire gummed it all back up. Sweet as a nut! Smile
First time I have had an exhaust that doesn't leak for about 10 months now, so loving life haha.

Then set about fitting these bad boys. 20mm hub centric spacers.

Put the front two on, but I *think* the rear arches may need rolling, so have left them for now.

Fitted the MK3 Golf arches, i think the look quite smart TBF. Needed these to get the wheels legal for the MOT with the 20mm spacers and to stop the car looking stupid.

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Curt - 25-10-2013

Looks purposeful Grant Smile if you do need to roll your arches you can use my roller.

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Grant - 25-10-2013

I didn't realise you had a roller. Thats a very kind offer mate, I may take you up on that in exchange for a crete of beer Smile Nice one!

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Dum-Dum - 25-10-2013

Looks good mate but needs lowered to make the arches and width look right IMO

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - laurence_13 - 25-10-2013

V8 spec is Rover 3.5 v8 with
VIPER TYPHOON CAM, STEEL TIMING GEAR, RHOADS LIFTERS, DW060 VALVE SPRINGS, BULLETED VALVE GUIDES, PORTED & RE-PROFILED CYLINDER HEAD. (sorry for caps its copy and pasted)
Induction - MOROSO/K&N AIR FILTER, HOLLEY 390 CARB, OFFENHAUSER DUAL PLANE INLET MANIFOLD (thats the old set up cant find the injector setup)

turbo info -
Brand New T3/T4 HYBRID TURBO WITH INTERNAL WASTEGATE

Turborevs T3/T4 turbochargers consisting of a T3 turbine section,
(Stage III trim) and a T4 compressor section (T04E trim).
The T3/T4 offers the low inertia and fast boost response of the light weight T3 turbine wheel
and the high airflow characteristics of the T4 compressor family,
making the T3/T4 the turbo of choice for high performance “import” applications

Stage-3 Turbo T3/T4

Compressor Wheel / Housing A/R Ratio:
Inlet (mm): 50.5; Outlet(mm): 76; Trim (in/out x 100): 55; A/R: 0.5

Turbine Wheel / Housing A/R Ratio:
Inlet (mm): 65.5; Outlet(mm): 55.9; Trim (in/out x 100): 73; A/R: 0.63

Which is running at 15psi, producing 361bhp at the crank.

If you want any more information just ask and I'll try find it, would be awesome to see this happen!

Oh yeh looks good lol

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - vlj - 25-10-2013

Looking great buddy! xx

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Poodle - 26-10-2013

Those arches look good mate, like it.

Why is everyone arguing about what engine to install and how so you can retain handling chracteristics? To make it rwd or awd you WILL completely change the handling as it requires a change away from the torsion bar type rear suspenion assembly, which is a fundamental part of what makes a 306 handle like it does. Changing which wheels are driven will also make a substantial amount of difference, as will the v8 power delivery. Imo there's no point in trying to retain handling characteristics with a project like this, just decide which engine you want and where, and how many wheels you want driven and get on with it. :p

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Grant - 26-10-2013

Haha fair point Smile

I just don't want it handling like a sack of.

My main concern is the engine will e up front, with the rear wheels driven, so no weight over the rear wheels. Hence the rear end gearbox.

Mid-rear engined would be epic and the best solution, but I need to work out the practicalities of it. I'm just gonna have to MTFU and buy an engine to start mocking up I think

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Piggy - 26-10-2013

just buy an old range rover v8.

you can pick old tatty ones up for 500quid.

get out the engine...then sell rest for parts/scrap and make the money back!

Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - Jonny b - 26-10-2013

If ιt's rwd you will have a fair amount of weight in the back anyways bud with the axel ɑnd diff

RE: Ell Diablo - V8 Engine?? - floz123 - 26-10-2013

If you're gonna go rover v8 try and get one out of a tvr Wink they had better compression, different cam and ported heads etc Wink

This is very true. I'll have to sit down with a bottle of whiskey and do the maths one night.

And a hefty price tag to go with them Wink Would be epic though.
