2 Pack Painting (DIY) - silverzx - 03-12-2015
I know you're supposed to use an air fed mask so please don't lecture me about that. I've heard from various people (including a friend who sprays for a living) that a filter mask will be fine for spraying a car on a one off occasion.

Obviously will need a suitable space to spray in, heaters, gloves, gun, compressor, paint, hardner, bla bla bla.
What about face protection for the bits between mask/googles etc? Just some vaseline or something to protect the skin?

Welsh pug is correct however my friend sprayed his motor with just a decent mask and the hold your breath method. Lol. I would advise a proper air breathing mask to be honest.

The shit in 2-pack is pretty nasty, you won't feel the effects for some time.
I think it's abit like asbestos in the way that increased exposure gives increased risk, however you can get unlucky and one exposure could be all it needs to f*ck you over.

Its not a useless post, the stuff is horrible / can have some seriously nasty consequences down the line... I bought a proper air fed mask and even re located / ducted my compressor before I painted my car for this reason...
If you arnt protected suitably use a different paint. You only live once....

Seriously, it's f*cking nasty stuff - it contains Isocyanates - Methyl Isocyanate was the chemical in the world's worst chemical disaster in Bhopal.

Still waiting for someone to come in whos sprayed with a non air fed mask and give their thoughts though.

i get problems spraying with std spray tins if i dont use a FFP2 mask, it will f*ck me over for the next day
you only got to do a google search on the 2k paints to find its nasty stuff

But you also see people saying it's fine and I bet 90% of the info on the web is 2nd / 3rd / 4th / 5th hand info e.g. "I read on a forum you shouldn't do it, it's nasty shit and you HAVE to use an air fed mask".
We all know what forums are like...
End of the day it's toxic, but covering whole body, wearing a mask that I'm gonna bin the filter on after one use and not hanging around the car after spraying, seriously how bad can it be.

I've used these types of masks for several years and so has pretty much every other painter I know. You need to ensure that you also have some sealed eye protection and also make sure that where you are painting is a well ventilated area but also somewhere where others will not be able to breath in the fumes as they are highly toxic.

Well, considering a major component of 2k based paints killed 16,000 people in Bhopal - pretty bad is the answer.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is merely speculating that it's "not that bad" - yes there's lots of people I'm sure who've done it and have no ill effects, but I would say you'd be incredibly foolish to do so - a filter mask will not take it out - you need an air fed respirator mask or at least an activated charcoal mask, but wouldn't risk it personally with just an activated charcoal one tbh, when spraying there's so much of the stuff in the air, it'll saturate the filter...
Not to mention, it'll go in through your skin and eyes and any other orifices - I'm usually one for "fuckit, be reet", but tbh, it's one I wouldn't risk... Personally anyway...

I use one of these at work for asbestos work so will be fine for what you are planning. Not ideal but will work. Only thing is you need to add a filter onto that which is another £10. Its not cheap but its a small price to pay for your life.
Personally, id go the full hog and get a air fed mask.
Also, you say "how bad can it be"...People said that about asbestos years ago (and still do). Look how that panned out.
Seriously, don't put a price on your life. It may not be something that is clearly visible to effect your health and it may not effect it immediately but it will eventually. And tbh, i can't think of many worse ways to die than a slow painful respiratory death

Mask suitable for spraying 2k for upto 36 hours below but still run a health risk.
I have sprayed 2k without a mask with plenty of ventilation, stupid I no but would never again makes you feel sick, shaky and unwell for a few days now bare in mind this was just a car roof.
I sprayed bumpers in the garden before on a nice day with a mask like the one above and felt fine.
Do it at your own risk.

I use 2k a lot and don't use a air fed mask but have a extremely efficient booth and do not stay in there when I am not spraying, not sure what filters I have on my mask but it's a 3 stage that I also use to use when I was a fumigator for huge grain stores, if it could stop a gas which would have killed me within a couple of minutes then I'm more than happy to use it with 2k, the other comments are very true and I would not take any risks with the stuff, persanly if you are unsure I would go down a different route and use a water based paint, that said 2k can give an extremely good finish and hide allsorts of sins

Depends on the molecule size of the fumigation chems vs isocynates. The problem with the isocyanates is it will penetrate straight through a normal mask, you almost may as well not be wearing one as far as they're concerned.

its a long term damage thing with isocyanates, and the other chemicals in there.. air fed respirators are fine, but there are suitable filter type masks that are capable of removing volatile solvents (but most are not).
