RE: 2.1TD Swap - Piggy - 28-11-2012 Ive driven a few 550ds and a v10 Tuareg once...yeah they shift but I choose petrol revs to 14k any day if it werent for the need of a workhorse RE: 2.1TD Swap - Ruan - 28-11-2012 Typical "modern" diesels though, they're all crap... As said, until you've driven a PROPERLY tuned diesel, you won't know what all the fuss is about, and you won't get what people mean by the torque coming in and holding until the redline.... No petrol will ever do it, you're always chasing the revs... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzWMK5BqMkE RE: 2.1TD Swap - Dum-Dum - 28-11-2012 Gotta say i just love the any gear any revs put your foot down and theres power there in the diesel. none of this waiting half an hour to come on cam or having to drop 4 gears from cruising speed/gear to go for it properly. RE: 2.1TD Swap - KrisB - 28-11-2012 And the 'go everywhere in 5th' thing ... Long as your doing 30 or more. I'd love a petrol... 10 yrs ago. RE: 2.1TD Swap - Dum-Dum - 28-11-2012 So excited for tomorrow now, hope we sort the niggles. It's the whole thing of having torque wherever you want it below 3000rpm, then after 3000rpm, the torque may be dropping but the power is still increasing as revs rise, so you've got the max pull ... The power spread is so much greater, no wrenching at the gearbox to get the right gear... You can go 90% as quick with 10% of the effort, but when you put in 100% of your effort, you get places even quicker... There's no engine that wil have the split personality of a Diesel... RE: 2.1TD Swap - CJ_Derv - 29-11-2012 ^^^ Exactly this PIGGY dude has got muchos to learn....... Diesel + Torque FTW 550d's and tuaregs are heavy as anyway so are going to be shite RE: 2.1TD Swap - Dum-Dum - 29-11-2012 Engine is in, we have clearance at the back, downpipe is on order, praying that a 605 de cat might be a straight fit. RE: 2.1TD Swap - zx_volcane - 29-11-2012 Wow this is progressing quick, good work! RE: 2.1TD Swap - Dum-Dum - 29-11-2012 RE: 2.1TD Swap - Kwik - 29-11-2012 good progress lads RE: 2.1TD Swap - Piggy - 29-11-2012 (29-11-2012, 10:47 AM)Dum-Dum Wrote: Engine is in, we have clearance at the back, downpipe is on order, praying that a 605 de cat might be a straight fit. well done chaps...so clearance at the back with no bulkead 'tapping' and standard turbo? very curious about this as my engine has just arrived and I was thinking and wondering what downpipe would work!! also...how are you routing the turbo...still going under the engine from turbo to intercooler? piggy (29-11-2012, 10:14 AM)CJ_Derv Wrote: ^^^ Exactly this PIGGY dude has got muchos to learn....... but that massively tuned tdi wont do the mpg like you want a tdi to do anymore... something like a 335i with the twin scroll turbos, that produces more torque than an evo8 at full chat from only 1500rpm and then right across the range all the way to 7500rpm! and they do 45mpg+ AND I wont be working for the army in the process creating smoke screens! RE: 2.1TD Swap - CJ_Derv - 29-11-2012 Piggy aint got a clue where your heading now uve lost me u obv no best LOL Anyway.... Cracking progress boys dont forget first start VID ![]() RE: 2.1TD Swap - Mattcheese31 - 29-11-2012 any massively tuned DT will still do great MPG so long as you don't stick the pedal to the metal . . ![]() RE: 2.1TD Swap - Piggy - 29-11-2012 (29-11-2012, 02:29 PM)Mattcheese31 Wrote: any massively tuned DT will still do great MPG so long as you don't stick the pedal to the metal . . but that kinda isnt worth it then surely?! I'd say it is. 50mpg when you drive normally and then if you want to go fast it will, and it'll still get 30/40mpg RE: 2.1TD Swap - CJ_Derv - 29-11-2012 I kinda thought that was the principle of all cars aint it?? You drive sensibly get good MPG and twat it get shit MPG not rocket science really ![]() Seen a lot of spoon feeding recently ![]() RE: 2.1TD Swap - Ruan - 29-11-2012 The whole point is the split personality with a Diesel - don't be on the throttle = 55mpg, on the throttle = 30mpg... Not rocket science... It's wanky highly tuned NA petrols that consume ungodly amounts of fuel just sat cruising on the motorway because they've got so much valve overlap they're blowing 30% of the mixture out the exhaust on every stroke... Only time this will change will be when petrols end up working on nigh on the Compression ignition cycle... The latest petrols coming out are starting to run ultra lean burn principles at part throttle, but still when you go to WOT, you're talking 13:1 or even 12:1... A diesel is running at 17:1 for something that's tuned, an OEM engine will be probably running at in excess of 20:1 without EGR in the mix! RE: 2.1TD Swap - Dum-Dum - 29-11-2012 So im getting the train home again. List of jobs for tomorrow; Sort bottom rad hose coolant leak. Make rest of exhaust system. Bleed cooling system Refit drive shafts. Fill gear oil. Finish mounting fmic Finish making boost hoses Bleed fuel system Refit bonnet, bumper and wheels Probably a few other niggles. Not a big list lol RE: 2.1TD Swap - GP123 - 29-11-2012 A fella i know had this engine. It definitely has the torque, but a well tuned 1.9td would be just as good..going by his that is. :/ RE: 2.1TD Swap - Dum-Dum - 29-11-2012 No substitute for cubes mate. RE: 2.1TD Swap - Piggy - 30-11-2012 getting there...update us on that downpipe when you sorted?! RE: 2.1TD Swap - Dum-Dum - 30-11-2012 Hopefully have it back tonight. Will update then.
