How close those the flywheel sensor for the rev counter have to be be in order to pick up a reading

The reason being I put xud9 into my 205 and the rev counter those not work. I used the xud9 bracket for the sensor however the sensor could be closer to the flywheel

The rev counter was working before conversion.
When I fit them, I push the sensor right up against the flywheel then back it off just a fraction
I've tried various position of the sensor and still no luck.

Is there an earth for these?

It was working fine until I changed my engine and painted my bay.

Also my spots wont work after all this, hopefully an earth somewhere

Just to note.

The plug from the car has 2 wires and the plug from the sensor has 3 wires

Wondering now if I mixed sensors up?

Its on a 205 dturboo
which flywheel are you using?

should be a 1mm gap IIRC, new sensors come with tabs on the end which are 1mm tall so you just bung it in the hole till it touches and they wear off if there's any discrepancy in the flywheel.
as said, they need to be ridiculously close to pick up. Put a blob of blue tack on the end, squash it into the hole then tighten. Blue tack will squidge off and hopefully leave it dead close.

Using the xud7 (d turbo flywheel) which was used before,

Is there a different mounting point on the xud7 for the flywheel sensor?

Something tells me that the flywheel sensor clamp was different, I used the xud9 flywheel sensor clamp

I pushed the sensor right into the flywheel where it stopped on the tabs (this also didn't work)

Doh
yes, xud7 has a different clamp.
could this be causing the problem?

Does it mount it the same spot as the xud9?
I did a clutch change on mine some years ago, sensor never worked since. Possibly five years now without a rev counter.

Perhaps I'm too idle to be bothered by it.
