hi iv got a berlingo diesel, in the morning on starting its like its fireing on 3,diesel knock, and blue smoke, untill you drive up the road smoke go's and diesel knock go's, been told injectors but if injectors would'nt it be all the time,im stumped.
does it only do it on cold starts? or does it do it all the time.
For example, driving around till engine temp reaches 70, switch engine off, then start back up.
hi no just when you start in the morning after it's been for a run and it starts ok, as long as you don't leave it to long
Welcome a long Smile A lot of knowledgeable people on here for diesels Smile
thanks grant iv had some peugeots in my time great cars,
Welcome to the forum, sounds like glowplugs to me, but then i'm no expert. I get the same sort of thing when mines cold, runs real lumpy and shit for a few minutes, then sorts itself out.
hi wingnutz i thought it might be glowplugs but got new one's and still the same, one day was running great then left it for 2 days it was like this .
Potentially glow plugs give it a couple of cycles on the glow plugs see if that helps. I did a guide on here on how to test glow plugs. Could also be the glow plug relay
hi thanks jenkosowls iv just gone tryed 3 cycles on glowplugs and i tested power to plugs is 12v then clicks off,but still the same, so is your car 173bhp.
Another vote for glowplugs here.
This question comes up time and time again yet no one knows the answer iv had 3 xud's that done this and im convinced its somthing to do with the lucus fuel pump and im 99% its isnt the glow plugs
hi puglove on my diesel pump its got DELPHI on it what that means ain't got a clue.
Ummm not sure lol. But there was 2 different pumps fitted to the old XUDs one being a lucus. Which im sure yours has and the other being a bosch.

The lucus pumps are pretty crappy tbh. Is your van a NAD or a turbo?

Is it like this by any chance?

hi puglove yes its a van none turbo and its worse then your video a lot worse
Yeah that car got alot worse after that video to tthe point where you couldnt see down the street through the smoke lol.

Umm yeah i think its somthing to do with the lucs fuel punp. You never hear of a bosched XUD doing this. Just slap an XUD9TE in it with a bosch then it will be sorted and alot faster Big Grin
so if i change fuel pump to bosch should sort it

It used to be it's now in a skip awaiting scrap!

Diesels ignite there fuel under high compression after an initial heat source. A dodgy or weak plug won't ignite the fuel till it's got heat so Un burnt fuel is the white smoke. I found that 2 non working plugs causes havoc!

My old bosche'd xud did this when glow plugs were failing which then lead me to doing the above guide.

I looked into doing the Bosch conversion on my nad berlingo but it's different bracket and cambelt setup on them just easier to buy a Dt lump and drop that in
Its isnt garentee'd no.

If you read the 'cold start headache' thread in this section it puts across some good things to check. I.E air leads. Do you have the hand primer on the NAD?
mmmmmmm worth thinking about

Especialy when you can get up to a safe and reliable 130bhp with just a spanner & allen key apposed to your current 60 odd bhp
mmm 130 bhp sounds good
Bosch conversion on a nad isn't as straight forward as on a Dt as I'v just stated. Otherwise my van would be on one now
And if it helps you make up your mind yoi can pick up a good DT lump for £100 on here Tongue
Air getting in the fuel system somewhere id expect...check arond primer / filter / leak off pipes around injectors etc...
ok thanks all for advise

Failing that, the engines possibly just wore / a little more static injection timing will aid matters..

The lucas pumps are set with less timing than bosch's, espically if people retro fit...thats why cars always seem to run / start like new with a bosch, its just because they have twice as much injection timing...
hi darren but my pump is a DELPHI ,but il cange the leak off pipes ,but how do you check the primer.
Delphi/TRW/Lucas all the same

Primer if it's same as on my berlingo itl be a plunger next to the fuel filter housing
ok thanks i did'nt know that do you know how to find out if your fuel filter primer is ok,
Should go firm/hard after a few pumps
