Ah that's a very good point Paul !

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - andyyy - 21-09-2015

Not much to report other than I managed get hold of a grill , not off a 205 though or even a Peugeot. Width ways it fit perfectly but was about 10mm to tall so I shaved that off with a Stanley blade.

i think it looks okay , what your guys opion on it?

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - andyyy - 27-09-2015

Well I put all the fuses back in and the rev counter still isn't working. Tried swapping the red and white cable which made no odds. Will check the earth and 12v feed when I can figure out where iv left my multimeter.

In over news the new gearbox is working and iv ran new copper brake lines. Got to tidy up a few wires in the engine bay and get a longer speedo cable as the exhaust is in the way of the old routing. Then I should be able to move on to finishing the paint on the roof as I'm still not happy with it and redo the rear quarter again.

Still have to find a windscreen as ever time I get close to one it gets smashed! Might even have to buy a brand new one.

Also need to finish off the exhaust parts are on there way but taking there sweet time to arrive.

Once all the painting is done I'll be able to put all the rubbers / windows back in and the plastic gti body kit etc and hopefully be able to get it back on the road , really starting to miss driving this!

Essay over !

If you look at the clocks from the driving seat position there is 2 earth plugs beside them make sure they are plugged in as mine werent causing the gauge not to work Smile if not i can send you the bramd new sensor i used as its tested and working Smile

Thanks I'll check the Earths I have a brand new sensor, not that means it works! If I can't get it going with what iv got I'll take you up on that offer. Thanks for the advice much appreciated.

Pin 3 from memory

Paul any chance you know the full pin out ? I assume 2 pins go to the sensor and the other two are live and earth ?

Also anyone know how to test the sensor I have access to oscilloscope if nessasary?

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - andyyy - 29-09-2015

So still messing about with the rev counter.

No voltage on pin 3.

On the gauge when unplugged and plugged in pin 2 & 3 ring out to each other as if there connected.

Pins 1 and 4 also have no voltage.

All checked against each other and also a known good earth.

Pins 2 & 3 ring out to earth when plugged into the gauge. When unplugged only pin 2 rings out to earth.

Got sick of messing about and stuck a live onto pin 3 and it blew a 25 amp fuse.

Any ideas what the hell is going on ? Only thing I can think is my gauge is f***ed Sad

Ignor all that rev counter now fully functional

Sorry should of clicked sooner you bought my old gti loom off me

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - td_dan - 29-09-2015

What was it?

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - andyyy - 29-09-2015

Something wrong with the loom causing no live, also live was supposed to be on pin 1 not 3 so combination of those two problems.

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - td_dan - 29-09-2015

Oh right, well glad its all fixed Smile

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - andyyy - 30-09-2015

So this showed up.

Going to use it as a EMP gauge, so removed oil from it as it won't be oil pressure.

Only thing needed was a screw driver spanner and a couple mm of PVC tape.

also my extra long 1200mm speedo cable showed up so should be able to atlast put my dash back together. For now anyway

Got a little bit of spare time so made this for the new gauges.

So bad news before I could even start playing with the turbo it started pissing out oil and it seized twice once when first started freed up then seized again (no idea why there's oil and its not overheating)  Dodgy  Think the CHRA I bough is a load of shite still no play in the bearings though. The car hasn't even moved yet and already wrecked a turbo Doh .  The oil line has been running unrestricted as I was under the impression this was fine for these turbo's maybe not will also add 1mm restrictor.

Managed to snap up a deal on eBay for two turbos for £55 so one of those will be clocked up and going on here. And ill rebuild the old CHRA for the current turbo at some point.

Also made this

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - andyyy - 21-10-2015

Pulled the turbo off again tonight and dug out the old chra.

Tomorrow will pull the new chra apart and the old one and try and make a good one from the pair

When I get a whole weekend I'll trailer the car over to my workshop to make up the rest of the exhaust and redo the roof as I'm still not happy with it (strange reactions)

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - Piggy - 21-10-2015

DON'T add the restrictor!

They need the oil flow/pressure for the oil filled bearing.

Its the ball bearing units which need the restrictor

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - andyyy - 21-10-2015

Yes I was under the impression that was the case but have been recommended to add the restrictor.

I won't add the restrictor will just rebuild and retry, I suspect the chra was bad from the word go. Heard alot of bad things about these as garret dont sell the parts so most are chinese copies

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - Piggy - 21-10-2015

Yeah, I had oil seal issues even on low mileage units. I think its a given they will let some oil through even as standard.
But I was going to add a restrictor, think I even have one here but got some proper info and realised it would be a bad idea!

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - andyyy - 21-10-2015

How have you got round the issue ? Or is it just luck ?
Also marking the compressor wheel to the shaft with a fine sharpie pen should be enough to keep balance ?

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - Ruan - 21-10-2015

Yeah, as said, don't add a restrictor to these - it's the ball bearing units that really need the restrictor - these engines are regulated to 5bar oil pressure anyway.

As you've found - Garrett don't supply brand new parts for these, so be very wary of replacements. If you're taking it apart, be ultra careful to not lose the location - it's by no means ideal taking it off at all, but as always, needs must - just be super careful, I know many people who have and it's been fine since.

RE: Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red GT2052 VNT - HDi--Power - 21-10-2015

Your turbo is mounted very low down, has your oil return enough of an angle to return properly/ is it large enough? they really don't like flowing sideways or the oil will pour out through the turbo seals. Straight down is idea but not possible in you case.

The oil return is definitely large enough, but as you say the angle is fairly poor as it comes 90 then goes down to the sump at about 45, will look at resolving this when I can get the car over to the workshop and fab up a better manifold. Thanks for pointing that out it was something I wouldn't of thought of.

Yeah I won't add a restrictor. I have a old chra that looks genuine i'm hoping to make a good one out of the current one and that.

Also another gt2052V has showed up in the post this morning , still waiting on the other turbo that was part of the deal on ebay but not so interested in that one as its a gt2052ls off a rover petrol.

So once the new Manifold is made up the 2052 that showed up in the post the morning will be going on as it already seems a much better turbo that the current one no play, all looks quite new and genuine.

Nice build, been reading since the start and I like it!

Thanks there should be some more progress soon.

Small update, still trying to get this over to the workshop alot of stuff has been going on in my personal life which has unfortunately got in the way but after new years that'll all be out the way and some time should free up Smile

I plan to take this over to my workshop at the end of next week for exhaust to be made up and a fair few new shinies to bolted on. Plans have changed slightly with the turbo the gt2052v is going to be sacked off in favor of a better turbo, if it turns up in  time.

Anyway there will be a proper update soon, hopefully.
