Home network problem - crashing router
#1
Forgive me ... my home technology seems to be forever crashing.

We've got a BT smart hub - this hub has different colour styles to identify differently problems.

My main PC (and the cause of the crashing) is connected via TP link AV600.

Crashing happens when a game updates attempts to update - it happens to two different applications which attempt to update - Steam and Blizzard desktop.

The router will flash orange and then go a solid orange.

Is the router bust or is it another problem?

Update:

read this article: https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity-...-p/1704674

It says i should " invest in a good quality third party VDSL capable modem/router. " Any ideas or guidance for this?

So its defo the router if it is, it could be a bad router that cant handle load as per say. Have you tried calling BT and making a complaint seeing if they will send you a new BT Router maybe this will cure the problem.

How old is the router Ginge? Might be worth logging in to it to see if there are any firmware updates available.

It never had an issue up until recently ; I can only think it's a load issue as it really only ever crashes when attempting to download/update or patch something
BT don't really want to know - Every time they say 'we can confirm your internet is working fine'

Router is about 10 months old.
Would there be updates in that period?

Mmm, that's a relatively new router so it's quite probably up-to-date.  Poss still worth a try though.

Guessing your router is set to DHCP? There’s no IP address conflicts?

Have you tried a hard reset on your router, using the reset button on the back. Also is there not a log in the routers menu showing why it rebooted?

Router could be screwed.

We were having problems with our connection dieing everytime I tried uploading anything. Got BT out, they tested a load of stuff then eventually just gave us a new router which solved it.

It was that bad, I could predict when it would crash each time. 3 minutes into uploading a 50mb file, which was roughly 30mb uploaded by that point.

I would get a £50-60 Netgear/tp link/asus router, the BT ones are crap from my experience and are always failing. Try it if it doesnt resolve the issue then return it. I'm an IT tech for a living and bt routers keep me very busy.

Thanks - is there any in particular you'd recommend?

They all hundreds of abbreviations and acronyms which make it look like another language

So, BT are sending me a new one as this router is crashing every 2 minutes now.

If that then fails. I'll seek a new router all together

Only just seen this, the latest standard I believe is 'C' so anything with 802.11ac will have the fastest speed for the devices which are compatible. Not sure how many will be 'C' compatible at the mo... Something like this looks good: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wireless-Connec...B01LFGTEI6

It is both fibre and adsl compatible as I am not sure which connection you will have in your home an rj45 (most likely fibre) or rj11 (adsl).

Did the new BT router resolve it out of interest?

Thank you for that! Massive help.
I'll order that after Christmas

And no, the new router still crashes when a download is attempted, only difference is the crashes aren't as 'harsh' - it'll reboot a bit quicker

I know nothing about routers and such, but my 2p.

I had a crappy captive network run by some shit router, dont even know what make.

I have a netgear nighthawk now and it has solves all my traffic issues, and the customisation/control is immense compated to stock.

I guess what im saying is BT suck with their routers, and dont ever go stock.

Same as this man, I went from a Home Hub to a Netgear Nighthawk. Difference is night and day. Hasn’t dropped the connection once in the 4-5 months it has been installed in comparison to the home hub which was 3-5 times a day.
