so even though I clearly informed the DVLA that I had swapped engines in a peugeot 405 style from a NAD to a TD, notwithstanding that the rolling chassis are just about identical and both engines were commonly fitted and the swap is utterly straightforward, DVLA have changed the engine number, noted the engine change but not altered the vehicle to a 405 Style TD so having clearly pointed the fact of the engine upgrade to TD to my insurer (churchill) and recieving my new cert, it was written inexplicably as a Like for like swap and still named a style D so I rung them up and told them it was a TD to be told that Churchill consider my car (Now) as "Modified" due to the increase in power of over 10 per cent.
They said it was their "Mistake" but at the end of my current policy (july) they will not renew on this vehicle, and my excess went from £100 to £350 just like that.
1) have I any redress with the DVLA
2) does anyone know an insurer who will give me a fair quote, It is still really a bog standard Car
Its been stress on legs and if the wife finds out.....Oh Dear!

the moment you change the engine it is classed as modifeied even if you have just changed it to a diffrent sort in the same car. Insurance companies just dont like it at all. You need to come off main stream insurance and speak to sky, adrian flux, brentcare to name my three i usually ring up. usually flux insure me to be fair.
As for the dvla they will not alter the vehicle to a diffrent spec as it would technically be a clone then. say i bought a lancer, then put all the evo bits on it. Does it make it identical to an evo yes. Is it an evo and demands the same price. No its still a modded lancer

This is how it works. As soon as you modify the car, even if it's with standard parts to make it the specification of another standard car it is still a modified car.
Go to a specialist insurer and you'll probably save some money. I'm with Equity Red Star through Adrian Flux and they never have any problems with engine swaps. Think my premium is under £500 a year with all mods declared, business use and all the bells and whistles on a 306 with an engine swap.

mmhmm, i am with brentacre,, underwritten with markerstudy and they are amazing, they insure the BHP figure and you declare the mods to them and they make no difference to the price for adding additional stuff provided it doesnt go over the horse power figure set.
£330 all in fully comp with a £250 excess.
a "standard" insurer wont want to insure you as it's out of their niche if the car is modified..
Adrian flux, Brentacre, etc all cater well for the modified car market and especially brentacre as the guy there runs a silly mechanical TD merc and we had about an hour chat with each other about it ..
Given the choice between Niall and the sheep. I would choose the sheep!

When i went from NA to TD on my 205 it pretty much doubled my insurance.
from £350 to £650 and im 25 with 4 years NCB and also with the addition of a smear on my licence.
so im with Mattcheese31, your quotes seem ludicrously overpriced so far! Hopefully you'll have better luck with some others....

Yes Dan... the rolling chassis is a nad "style"registered one...(and although the xud9te turbo diesel is made in this "style"guise and i was at pains to describe this) the placing of a turbo diesel engine in the nad chassis is the stumbling block...I asked...
My mistake is not getting a turbo diesel in the first place ....that was the big "foul up"...but you know how it is the rolling chassis are virtually identical and I assumed....
Its cost me mate....

Ive had GBH of the earholes and hoisted the white flag...
Only good thing though Welshpug is that my nad came from Torfaen Pontypool and she has only 80000 on her (with 3 belts)...
As for my project...well I have to say I`ve been driving way too fast (don`t they shift!) and to be honest off boost they are worse than the nad!!!!
but I do wonder if the box off the td in the nad is a goer as the ratios definately seem longer in 4th and 5th?

You should know about the pitfalls of assumption by your age. 
Honestly, try brentacre or chris knott. Flux are a joke, don't know why so many people still rate them.

I got all giddy as It is my first ever project...never too old to learn...I dread insurance renewal time at the best of times...but on the plus side Churchill have taken me back and not fleeced me on the nad....
I will find a clean TD 405 and go again asap.

Obviously from above its not always been the case, But I would have to personally HIGHly recommend Adrian Flux, who are currently insuring DT for an extremely competitive price (no one would get near it!) and ironically, its actually costing me less to insure vs my daily driver, which is just a very lightly modified HDI! So certainly worth a call..
Would also have to say, we once had to use there breakdown cover after an accident abroad, and the service was next to none...Everything covered for, transport, hotels, flights home, you name it, it was covered, with the same people at the end of a direct phone line any time we required help / assistance. Honestly couldn't fault the service, esp for what it cost to take out the cover!

another vote for flux here. They do insure me and the wife. No one else can get close to the prices we pay. My policy is a modified one that ive had for the last 2 years, they dont even bat an eye lid when i change the engine for a non standard one

The excitement is just too much to bear!  I hate phoning insurance companies too tbf, always takes way longer than i want it to.
Bizarre about Flux, they've not been able to get close to Brentacre's price on any of my vehicles for years. And tbf i had a bad experience with them - they opened a claim on my behalf after i clearly and repeatedly told them not to and then failed to follow it up properly - caused all helll with my no-claims, first thing i knew was over six months later when they told me my renewal had tripled because i had a claim open. Meant i had to go with them for another year (because despite it being their mistake they refused to honour my no-claims if i switched insurers) during which time the service just bombed out - all sorts of paperwork mistakes, chronic selling of my details to injury lawyers/PPI companies etc, phone calls cut off after waiting half an hour, nit-picking over vehicle details when the mods haven't changed year on year, blah blah blah. Put me off for life tbh.

In North Manchester the police have lost the roads to kids on lashed up motorbikes...I had about six of em wheelying up in a gaggle in the middle of the road, complete with balaclavas etc...not to mention late night screeeching cars.... there are two lawless kids (recently arrived and not in school) who are a knocking bet for an early grave.....utterly unafraid and brazen....
No wonder the insurance costs are so high!
