306 2.0l petrol automatic roadster airflow meter

Hi.
has anyone had a problem with uneven running at tickover speeds on a 2.0l engine sounds like the old fashioned "Hunting". Once engine warm/hot all ok fuel economy poor about 25mpg is this normal for the 2.0l 16v engine?. Could it be the airflow sensor?
