Power Sterering Ram/ Steering damper

Hi all, only just found this forum Rofl , had my car 3 months now.  Rofl

My power steering ram/ damper has a leak would like to get it sorted as making a right mess over the driveway now.

What do ppl do? can you repair and recondition them? I cant seem to find a NOS one for sale anywhere, don't really want to fit a second hand unit as they are always unknown condition.

Is their a modern replacement I can fit? Really didn't think that the part was gonna be hard to find!

I have read ppl upgrade to a vtr steering rack sometimes do you use the gti6 steering damper or the vtr one, so maybe their is a parts overlap some where?

Cheers for your help guys.

Hi Pugfrank. Welcome along to the club. Your post is well timed as I just had a steering rack refurbished at Western Power Steering in Bristol. They didn't touch the ram though as it wasn't leaking. Also, the guy said he's tried doing them before and it wasn't worth the time n effort (at professional rates). You have to peel back or cut off the crimped section on the end of the outer body & then find a way to re-secure it. If you're a handy DIY'er you might want to give it a go but you'd have to be prepared to have a back-up if it didn't work.

As you say, the steering rams aren't easy to come by. The part number is 4011.44. There are some available on eBay but they're not cheap unfortunately. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-205-3...SwbWZadIyP

I haven't tried searching anywhere else but I'm pretty sure there won't be a lot about. There will still be some decent 2nd hand ones around n it's probably worth contacting this seller on eBay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/peugeot306parts

401144 is not the right part number for a 306 with a 6 speed box. It probably fits a 205/309 and 306 models without the 6 speed box but it IS NOT the right part for a GTi6/Rallye because it won't have the stop on the ram to limit the steering travel in one direction. Without that, your passenger side wheel is going to hit the end of the gearbox.

The correct part number for a 6/Rallye is 401153

Ah very sorry, my bad. My head has been very distracted by other things n totally forgot about the effect the 6's gearbox had on the steering. I didn't realise it was the ram that limited the travel. Would you just seek out a good 2nd hand one Ben?

Yes......I might get my parts guy to see if he can find a new old stock one.
Problem is now finding a second hand one that's not leaking. It seems it's a case of when, not it from what I've seen....

Is it possible to get the unit rebuilt/refurbished?

Can anyone recommend any companies I could approach to enquire about this?
