Any decent/ branded gas shocks will feel like an upgrade if yours are knackered. KYB or Bilstein will do a good job at standard height or even down to about a 35mm drop.

Everything was degreased but I didn't silicone the top. That could be a good shout. Thinking about the thermostat part; as the engine heats up the diesel switches to bypass so effectively gets colder ...

Think it might be the lift part of the pump. If you pump the grenade while holding the throttle open it comes back to life and the revs rise. I'm sure I've read/ seen pictures on here of how to check ...
