Disconnected the electrics, red light came on when i switched on the ignition, needle stayed at empty. Attempted to pull the sender unit out but couldn't get the black ring out with the tools I had...

Resolved this in the end! If it's any use to anyone, I kept experimenting cutting holes in the outside facing edge of the seal. The seal has absolutely huge holes in the side of it now, seems counter ...
