Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - FIXED! - WiNgNuTz - 18-11-2012

So ive found the source of my fuel leak, and its the bung on the Lucas pump that you have to take off to get to the max fuel screw (poxy lucas pumps! grrr). Im HOPING that the local pug dealer will have one in stock (if anyones got service box, a rough price would be appreciated), but ive got to get home yet tonight.

One option is beg my mum to lend me her Micra for the night, but i dont think she was entirely convinced with that idea, so im trying to find some sort of temporary fix that will get me home, and then to work in the morning.

My bro has suggested this:

...but it mentions that it shouldnt be used anywhere that it will be in constant contact with petrol. Would this also apply to diesel? And how easy would it then be to get the old bung off to put the new one in tomorrow (assuming i can actually get one)?

Any suggestions/help appreciated! Big Grin

You're gonna bin the lucas right?

If so, just liquid metal on the outside? might stop it enough.

Failing that, gaffer tape?

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - samass - 18-11-2012

liquid metal, or that stuff might work. just degrease beforehand

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - WiNgNuTz - 18-11-2012

Well yeah, the pump is at a point where im happy with the tune, so to all intents and purposes, i could weld the damn thing shut. I have got my bosch pump, but no lines or injectors at the moment, so its not like i can just get the conversion done. Which is a PITA. I want my bosch on.

Funnily enough, my missus suggested gaffa tape as well! lol

where would i get liquid metal?

/n00bquestion

any motor factors that's decent failing that halfords lol

My mum has suggested using clingfilm in a PTFE tape style, im not sure that sounds like a good plan?

Worth a go, right??

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - WiNgNuTz - 18-11-2012

im willing to try just about anything at the moment! lol

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - samass - 18-11-2012

probably just need to replace the o ring, no? so cling film might work, couple of folds of it

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - Jonny81191 - 18-11-2012

put the lid in a johnny? bit thicker than clingfilm...

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - samass - 18-11-2012

ah good shout, you are small enough to fit in a lucas pump!

you want to bodge a leak, and me and samass are online.

Of course it's gonna be bodgetastic!

I was being serious lol

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - samass - 18-11-2012

what about araldite? or a hot glue gun?

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - WiNgNuTz - 18-11-2012

Its all good, as said, i need a quick bodge, and youve helped out immensely! Big Grin

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - samass - 18-11-2012

so, which one you gunna try? lol

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - WiNgNuTz - 18-11-2012

Well i havent got any johnnys to hand, and i dont think clingfilm will hold up to much in the way of heat, so i think im gonna give the loctite a go.

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - samass - 18-11-2012

that might work. maybe wind the cap out a bit and fill the gap? giggity?

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - Kwik - 18-11-2012

epoxy putty?

Havent got any of that to hand either. Seriously limited on supplies, and nowheres open to get anything either. Gotta work with what ive got at the moment. Undecided

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - samass - 18-11-2012

rubber band instead of the o ring?

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - Kwik - 18-11-2012

rubber band is a good idea. the garden tap is sealed like that as o rings wouldn't work lol

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - Jonny81191 - 18-11-2012

is it just not sealing or have you butchered it?

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - WiNgNuTz - 18-11-2012

its been notched around the edge, where ive opened the pump to adjust the max fuel a few times, i can only assume one of the notches has gone too deep, or the o ring if fudged.

Rubber band does sound like a good plan actually.

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - Jonny81191 - 18-11-2012

blu tack?

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - WiNgNuTz - 18-11-2012

tried that....failed.

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - Jonny81191 - 18-11-2012

i'd go for the cling film idea personally.

RE: Lucas pump bung - temp fix possibilties - FIXED! - WiNgNuTz - 18-11-2012

Well, between them, my mum and samass came up with the goods in the end (inb4giggidy). I got the bung off, wrapped some cling film around it in a PTFE tape fashion, then put a small rubber band over the top of that, and its sealed it a treat! Absolutely bone-dry now.....stationary anyway. Ive got to go and get the missus so we can go home now, so ill check when im home and make sure its still dry then.
