steering wheel wobble - karl1989 - 30-10-2012

hi guys just a quick question. recently ive noticed when i set of if i dont touch the steering wheel it steers left and right and when turning left i can feel it try to pull back abit. could this be tracking or a wheel bearing?. my tracking is out but it was out before it started.

cheers karl

Sounds like chronic torque steer

RE: steering wheel wobble - karl1989 - 30-10-2012

happens when doing between 0 and 20mph ive noticed. not noticed when going over

Tyre pressures okay?

RE: steering wheel wobble - karl1989 - 30-10-2012

ye mate. what should they be at actually?. they 205/45 R16's

Re: steering wheel wobble - kernow_joe - 30-10-2012

Could be a number of things. P bushes, wheel bearing could cause wobbling. In balanced wheels, ball joints, Dodge tyre pressure, what have you checked/ replaced?

RE: steering wheel wobble - samass - 30-10-2012

P bushes would be my guess

RE: steering wheel wobble - 306__xrdt - 31-10-2012

I would quess to wheel bearing Smile

Re: steering wheel wobble - kernow_joe - 31-10-2012

Well wheel bearing can cause it to wobble, I have just replaced mine and it's fixed the wobble, but wouldn't be my first place to look.
Start with the easiest to diagnose/ fix

RE: steering wheel wobble - karl1989 - 31-10-2012

i checked the wheel has 9-3 movement on the drivers side. i fitted new track rod ends and ball joints and a bottom arm in july. one lower ball joint has a split rubber.

One wishbone......?! Always replace them in pairs, same as anything else chassis-wise. Guessing the parts were cheap if one of the ball joints has a split rubber already..?

If it's 9-3 movement it won't be your ball joints. First thing i'd be checking is wishbones/bushes, then track rods and TREs. They're easy enough to diagnose, so should know what's at fault by the time you're done.

got to totally disagree here, is easy to split a boot by not fitting correctly/not really thinking what you're doing, my meyle hd boot split after having driven the car twice all of about 6 miles. but I think this was down to jacking from ball joint without a split pin .....
if the ball joint is still good pack some more grease and fit a new boot can get them for a few quid, would imagine it would dry out/get f*cked pretty quick if its been driven around split though.

you should be able to feel where the movement is coming from ie at the hub(wheel bearing) or from the arm, more likely P bush, but these wouldn't cause vibration more random direction change mid corner

for new boot try here http://www.balljointboots.co.uk/ cheaper than getting a new one and not as wasteful Smile

Fair shout. Just remembered some people have problems with wishbones snapping by the p bush, so check that too.

RE: steering wheel wobble - karl1989 - 02-11-2012

well checked the car tonight. ball joints are fine. drivers side has play in wheel left to right and up and down. also think the P-bush has gone or going. tried to get a pic

Yeah that looks pretty wrecked...

RE: steering wheel wobble - Kwik - 03-11-2012

that looks like it's torn internally

RE: steering wheel wobble - karl1989 - 03-11-2012

sorted it. was the front wheel. weight must have some how come of. swaped it for one on the back and hey presto it worked Smile

RE: steering wheel wobble - Poodle - 04-11-2012

That wishbone is still wrecked, please tell me you're replacing it.
