Chopping gear stick - Niall - 27-09-2012

Did this in my old 1.8 and it was much nicer. Cut about 2 inches off and it made the car much nicer to drive.
Now with the gti, can you cut them down? Its about 4 foot long! Only thing im thinking is how is the cable attached to the stick? is it just a clip i can slide down or do i need to do some serious pikey bodging with some liquid metal?

RE: Chopping gear stick - Matt - 27-09-2012

Some possible pikey bodging Wink

RE: Chopping gear stick - JackLewis_Dturbo - 27-09-2012

surely not worth messing about with the lift up reverse?

RE: Chopping gear stick - Chris - 28-09-2012

Cut and weld job would be best IMO, I made a cable pull thing to go on my cut down one that was hidden under the gator but it was a faf making it.

RE: Chopping gear stick - Niall - 28-09-2012

hmmm going to have to work some serious magic with the liquid metal then!

RE: Chopping gear stick - declantg - 28-09-2012

Cut it you wetty

RE: Chopping gear stick - Niall - 28-09-2012

Shut ya trap faggot. I like having reverse thanks!

RE: Chopping gear stick - declantg - 28-09-2012

Do what curt has done and cut that stick

RE: Chopping gear stick - Chris - 28-09-2012

Niall got a spare here that I can cut and weld if needs be.

RE: Chopping gear stick - kernow_joe - 28-09-2012

no ones actually said, how is the cable attached/work?

This is what I'd like to know! Then I can work a solution.

Chris might take you up on that mate.

RE: Chopping gear stick - Chris - 28-09-2012

Theres a plastic sleeve bonded to the stick which the lift up collar sits on and holds the cable too.

Niall let me know and I'll get it sorted.

RE: Chopping gear stick - Curt - 28-09-2012

On the gear stick you have a plastic part glued to it. Quite solidly as I tried to remove it... This is what the plastic part of the cable clips in to. Then the lift reverse "collar" sits over this, which is where the end of the cable attaches to.

To do what you're wanting would take fair modification. I'd definitely recommend doing it to another one so you can just swap it, instead of mutilating your only one Wink

I think Chris is right, I think you'd have to cut a section out below the plastic part I mentioned, and weld it back together. Not worth the hassle IMO

RE: Chopping gear stick - kernow_joe - 28-09-2012

I need to remove my gear knob/stick to fit quickshift, does it still just pull like other models but leave the reverse clips on the stick?
and will it be able to slide out the bottom still?

RE: Chopping gear stick - puglove - 28-09-2012

Just do a curt and do a bike lever conversion

As much as i love that, i think id prefer just the standard setup tbh

Lol as cool as it is i wouldnt do it either ,

Just a thought, there are many cars/vans that use this system, run down the scrappy and if there is a version that is a bit more simple that you could use?

RE: Chopping gear stick - Matt - 28-09-2012

Brake lever conversion is epic winning though Tongue feels amazing when I put it on reverse, becauseRacecar

RE: Chopping gear stick - Tom - 28-09-2012

Do what Darrens done and use a solenoid? O:

RE: Chopping gear stick - Niall - 28-09-2012

Just been to look and the easiest way would be to chop and weld it.

That bit of plastic is bonded and can guarantee it isnt coming off in 1 piece. Peugeot dont sell it on its own Sad

RE: Chopping gear stick - puglove - 28-09-2012

What about my idea about using one off a different car/van, i know a peugeot expert uses this system with a real short gear box.

Forgot to say earlyer . When i go from DT to the 6 it feels massive gigity. To the point that its uncomfortable .

RE: Chopping gear stick - Niall - 01-10-2012

Tbh could pikey it right up, smash the bit of plastic off and cable tie the cable to the rod (would eventually slip up) or liquid metal it....because that shit fixes everything! Big Grin

RE: Chopping gear stick - Joe - 12-10-2012

do these work like vauxhalls? where you can still put it into any gear while the levers up?

RE: Chopping gear stick - Niall - 12-10-2012

yeah you can mate. dont see why youd want to though?
