Rallye head swap - Matt - 15-07-2012

Right so far I've got,

Replacement rallye head, (cams out vacuum disconnected)
water pump

On order

Cambelt kit
Headgasket and head bolts
Light weight bottom pulley

Need to get

Waterpump gasket
Throttlebody gasket
Vaccum pump gasket
Rocker gasket (sits between the metal that holds cams in?)

Is there anything else I need for the change?

Also it's proving difficult to find a few gaskets, so would this instant gasket stuff be any good?

Think that's everything. Also the exhaust gasket is reusable no?

RE: Rallye head swap - Chris - 15-07-2012

Inlet/exhaust gaskets for sure.
The rocker gasked use the instant stuff on the engine I have.

Water pump will come with a new gasket aswell.

RE: Rallye head swap - Matt - 15-07-2012

Water pump doesn't have a gasket, it's a second hand new one I got with the head from Sam

RE: Rallye head swap - Chris - 15-07-2012

Garentte its not new, new.
For the sake of 30 quid go and buy a brand new one as I wouldn't want to have any used part on the belt setip on a 6 engine for sure.

Also I'd be striping that head down to and checking all the valves and oil seals as that engine was bought without it been seen running.

That's if its from sam as in the one I know.

RE: Rallye head swap - Matt - 15-07-2012

Yeah it's pretty stripped gunna have it skimmed and pressure tested etc will get a garage to have a look over.
Xsi water pump the same as the '6? If so I have a brand spanking new one

Yep water pumps are the same

RE: Rallye head swap - Chris - 15-07-2012

Yep the water pump should be. Same block and all.

I'd be having all the valves out too and chcking them properly to see if there are any bent ones. As you won't be able to tell with them in the head. And they'll need checking with one of thse displacment gauge things as sometimes you can't tell by eye.

RE: Rallye head swap - Dum-Dum - 15-07-2012

IIRC there isnt a proper gasket between the head and the cam carriers so use instant gasket, Im sure someone qualified will be along to confirm this though.

Apparently it was rebuilt 4k ago? Looks pretty tidy too be fair, can you get the valves out and check and just put them back in?

RE: Rallye head swap - Chris - 15-07-2012

Still doiesnt mean it was done properly though. I know the car it came out of was a salvage one so not likely to have ca£e with any history.
Don't wanna go through all this effort and if it taps having to do it again.

Yep you can but you'll need a valve spring compressor and make sure they go back into the same place they came out of.
If you do that change the oil stem seals too for piece of mind.

Very true. None of the xu Petrol series had gaskets from the factory.

RE: Rallye head swap - Matt - 15-07-2012

Cam carriers? The metal but that holds the cam down?

Also stem seal? How easy to replace?

RE: Rallye head swap - Niall - 15-07-2012

Stem seals are easy providing your careful not to catch them and have the right tools. Will bell ya tomorrow and explain it to you.

Cam carriers use RTV gasket.

RE: Rallye head swap - Matt - 15-07-2012

Rtv? Guessing the rallye head will be the same as the '6? As cant find any gaskets I need with my reg

RE: Rallye head swap - Niall - 15-07-2012

Rtv = basically instant gasket. I've got a massive tube of it here so will bring it with.
Yep rallye and gti engines identical except for air con.
