Peugeot - 306 Turbo Diesel 1.9 - 1998
I recently stopped at a fuel station filled up (with Diesel) and a couple of miles down the road found the car seemed to lose "guts", it had a lack of power and couldn't accelerate over 50mph. I tried dropping down gears to build up revs but lower you went the car started to shudder, it could cruise along at 50 but was not right. I stopped and re started, all sounded and smelt ok... just no 'bollocks' to it (technical term!) feels like a block or something holding the engine back.
2 RAC guys & 2 mechanics later and no ideas what's wrong, I'm told to go to Peugeot or a diesel specialist ££££
any one any ideas? could it be the turbo?
Searching around the net I see EGR valves and fuel filter problems possibly produce similar issues

Could be the pickup in the fuel tank clogged up check under the backseat will be a round plastic lid you have to spin off with hammer and screw driver then check the pick up.

I'm putting money on fuel starvation...
I'd assume the RAC guys would have checked the fuel filter, but you might have to re-check the filter... Check the intank strainer as above...

As said, just check the fuel filters. Start from the front then to the pick-up in the tank.

Yeah topping up may have dislodged some sludge or something that your fuel system may not have liked

Also check the fuel primer under the bonnet to make sure it stays firm to ensure air isnt getting in somewhere

Hi all, update:
Engine fuel filter replaced and rear checked - looks fine.
Tubing checked and primer is staying firm...
drove around the block but still the same problem. When revving above 3k there's a loud rattling noise, lots of smoke from exhaust and some from engine compartment.
any ideas?

Had it checked by a pro this morning and it seems it is a Turbo problem. Waste gate could be seized but it means getting the turbo OUT first to see!
I'm in the market for a new turbo I think, any hints, tip, bargains out there?

Doesnt sound like a turbo issue from what you have said so far. Is it bellowing black smoke when you put your foot down?

hi guys just to complete this thread. The mechanic pulled out the old one (caked in carbon) it was fully cleaned up and the cat was cut open, mesh taken out and re-welded. Clean as a whistle(ish) put back in, and job-done! expensive, but car is back to its best...

£400 labour - for diagnosis, taking turbo out, cleaning, refit & test
120,000 on the clock btw - but had a new turbo dump-valve on approx 95k

Hhhhhmmmnnn sounds a bit suspect to me, sounds like you paid all that for a decat, never heard of anyone having to take a turbo off to clean it! I may be wrong
