Hello strangers :) - Sian - 12-01-2018

Hey guys! So basically quick question. Getting the engine out of the 306, I’m wanting to have the top end rebuilt.. is my best bet to send it to Pug1off? Or does anyone know the best place Smile

Thankyou

RE: Hello strangers :) - cully - 12-01-2018

what wrong with the top end?

RE: Hello strangers :) - Sian - 12-01-2018

When I bought it it had the bottom end rebuilt.. and it’s not sounding too healthy at the min it has sat for over a year which hasn’t helped but it was never running great anyhow.. taps like an absolute bitch and it could do with a healthy heart ?

RE: Hello strangers :) - bashbarnard - 12-01-2018

Imvery good friends with a guy a t scholar motorsport where we are he could easily do it for you if need be as well. There are a few options at least

RE: Hello strangers :) - welshpug - 13-01-2018

I'd rather do it myself and get a local engineer to do any machining required.

if it has sat for a year I would get it nice and warm then do an oil change, give it a few good drives and it should quieten down a lot.

I wouldn’t have a clue where to start ahhahaa

RE: Hello strangers :) - Eeyore - 13-01-2018

I would just get it running especially if its been sat. You shouldnt just rebuild stuff willy nilly and itll cost you an arm and a leg with pug1off.

Do what welshpug says and just give it a service. Its easy enough to do! Go onto ECP and order all the bits and if you havent already get one of the halford tool kits its easy enough to do and there is a guide on here or on the 6 forum!

I’ve had it 4 years remember and when I bought it, it was a ‘non runner’. It’s done 170k. i do start it.. and leave it running for a while, haven’t for a few weeks because it’s pissing put petrol haha! but the main reason i took it off the road was to get the engine out! It’s never sounded healthy! I’ve worked my ass off loads of hours to save and get it back mint Smile

RE: Hello strangers :) - Mighty306 - 14-01-2018

You don't really know what the problem is with the head at the moment, other than it's tapping.  From my armchair research (there are many on here who've done a lot more spannering than me & have infinitely more hands-on experience Smile ) I believe tapping can be something as simple as lack of oil in hydraulic lifters or a loose spark plug.  The former is likely to quieten down once the car has been running for 5 mins.  (Not sure if insufficient oil pressure will cause them to keep tapping continuously?).

I think Eeyore was hinting at getting a proper diagnosis before launching in to a rebuild.  If you're worried about driving it any distance (assuming you can get it through an MOT) then perhaps somewhere local can perform a leak-down & some other tests on the engine?  Otherwise, Miles (http://www.pugracing.com/) is in Fordingbridge in North West Hants.  (I keep meaning to drop by his workshop as my girlfriends parents live less than a mile away!)

If you're absolutely sure the bottom end is OK & it turns out there is a problem with the cylinder head then you don't need to take the whole engine out to remove the head.

I'd do it myself and get a local engineer to do any works required.

RE: Hello strangers :) - miles - 27-01-2018

Head work a good local engineering firm is what you need, If your lucky you may have one but if not it's worth sending it off, Seen may that tap when put back together. One of those things where my engineer is a similar age to me as they have a habit of retiring which means you need to go thru the hole process of finding someone again.
Parts again a local shop or by all means drop me a PM, Followers (Tappets) I would only buy from Pug but expensive over pattern parts

Mighty306, Do you ever get along to Combe race days? generally there with either mine or the Prebble's

RE: Hello strangers :) - cully - 28-01-2018

Pooks Engineering in Tiverton Sian can do engine machining i know a few people use them
you really need to know what you need before carving lumps of metal though

Only went to Spring Action Day last year n hoping to go again this year.  Would love to get over to see some racing as well though.  Really have no excuse not to as it's so close for me.  When your next race?

RE: Hello strangers :) - Dum-Dum - 31-01-2018

Do you just want a skim and rebuild or do you want some fancy bits for more power while it's apart (like big valves, 9 angle valve seats and porting)?

i came here expecting a euphemism and this post seems serious...

RE: Hello strangers :) - welshpug - 31-01-2018

I don't think that serious, nor knows that much about 6 tuning.

*valves are big enough, its 3 angle seats, ports are too large if anything.
