Wireless dongle; talk to me. - ginge191 - 15-01-2017

Short story - internet is being installed.

My desktop PC has no wireless adapter nor does the office have an internet point and I'm not keen on running cables across the house.

Anyone point me in the direction of a decent wireless dongle?

Any advice would be great

Something like this would be decent, TP Link is a half decent brand and buying from amazon allows you to return it aswell just in case it sucks although it shouldn't bought cheaper iones in the past and they're still going.

Ah, that looks spot on.

I've seen the USB dongles but expect they'd be somewhat slower than the cable

this is the exact thing i use. fricken brilliant. i can have a cable plugged into the router and its got the same download/upload speed as upsatirs using these.
http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/tp-link-av200-200mbps-powerline-starter-kit-n11nf

this way you can be plugged in all the time

why dont you just use your phone as a wireless hotspot? the data is going to cost you pretty much the same amount if youre on a sensible contract.

I think he means a usb wifi dongle, not a usb 3G dongle.

Something like this would get good signal for a USB dongle, but as others have said powerline adaptors might be better.

If you have a reasonable router (most routers are OK now for signal) then the limiting factor will be the antenna on the card itself.

if you have a PC then a normal wireless card (PCIe or PCI) with an uprated 9dBi antenna such as these 2

~Card
https://www.amazon.co.uk/PCE-N10-Wireless-wireless-connection-Software/dp/B004XFYGNK/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1484569785

~Antenna

we had an issue with my house (being an old house) where one of hte compters was sucking ALL of the bandwidth from the modem trying to connect repeatedly due to a very poor signal (half of one bar).. fitted this and moved it away from the back and it went form 1/2 bars to 5 bars and fastest connection available..

Obviously you will need to purchase more if you have a wireless card with more than one antenna fitted as standard

if you want USB then https://www.amazon.co.uk/YUNDA-Wireless-802-11n-Network-Adapter-x/dp/B01LEWO3GY/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1484570645&sr=8-11&keywords=USB+wireless+card and one of the above antennae

oh i see. my bad. You may be able to plug in a phone (connected to your wifi) and get internet through the micro usb cable.

RE: Wireless dongle; talk to me. - Rippthrough - 16-01-2017

I've been using the TP link AC1200 USB adaptors on everything for the past couple of years, keep up with 300 meg internet just fine, signal levels are good even over long distances.

RE: Wireless dongle; talk to me. - mattbarker32 - 16-01-2017

You could try these. Plug one in to a socket near your router and the other in your office. Then plug a network cable from the plug to your pc job done.

I've got 1200mbps powerline adapters in 4 locations in my house. And an Asus router which is all singing and dancing as well as a Netgear range extender.

But a cheap starting point for you could be
