Gearbox oil - semi synth or synth ? - maxaret - 19-03-2016

So much choice these days LOL
I was thinking of going 75w90 for gbox oil change but wondered if there was any advantage to paying about £1.0 more and going 'fully synth' !

Be interested to see any opinions - Thanks

Total BV oil...now called "Gear 8"

Its 75w80

This is the oem stuff and nothing much else is good enough tbh.

I use total in pug boxes aswell.

Although I mainly use Fuchs in all other vag, merc etc boxes and its top notch.

Just ordered 2 L of the total 75w80 from Nielsen via Amazon for 12.99 inc P+P - bargain LOL

not really, its £8.30 from a dealer without any discounts Big Grin

More like £8.30 per litre at the dealer! Wink

I just put fully synthetic in mine. Prob not much different but might as well as I'll only be doing it once. It's definitely made the change to first gear easier. I put 80 90 in once thinking all gearbox oil was the same and it went stiff to get in all gears. Won't make that mistake again.

For 2 litres ? that would be a bargain LOL.
My £12.99 was for 2 litres delivered ! and my nearest dealer is 20 miles away so I tend to get things delivered where I can.

Last 2 litres of 'box oil I bought from Citroen (closer than Pug) cost £16.38 for reference.

RE: Gearbox oil - semi synth or synth ? - powerandtorque - 21-03-2016

I bought two litres at the weekend from the local dealer... £15.01 inc VAT

Interestingly, they're still supplying the earlier Esso BV 75W80 oil rather than the replacement Total Gear8 stuff.

£13 delivered for the Total stuff is good value. As others have said, it's certainly worth getting the correct stuff as the synchros seem to be very fussy about oil used.

Using up old stock ?

Excellent Smile - I sometimes forget I have a Haynes manual for my cars - there is so much good info and knowledge on various car forums

royal purple ftw

RE: Gearbox oil - semi synth or synth ? - JTaylor2005 - 28-03-2016

Royal purple seems to be hyped about in America a lot but doesn't seem to have taken off that well in the UK. Unless they aren't aiming for the UK market

My 306 seems to be ok with the total gear oil - maybe has slightly nicer change : )

As soon as I finished the job - everything even slightly tainted by the old gear oil was put into a plastic bag and taken to the dump,I did not even want the smell in our bin LOL,I put the old gear oil into the now empty total containers and took them to the waste oil tank - bloody stuff stinks - yuk !
