Quieter diesel clatter? - strictly_perv - 24-04-2012

As some may know i've got an XUD in my 205. I find the engine noise/clatter really loud in my car compared to a 306 as the bonnet sound deadening is waffer thin.
Has anyone tried fitting a HDI cover to their XUD?
I'm running a FMIC so there's not going to be any airflow issues.

I just want it sounding abit less rattly like a modern diesel  well as quiet as I can get it anyways.

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - 4WayDiablo - 24-04-2012

Doubt it would make much of a difference
To be fair pug did pump out the loud dervs so there isn't much you can do.
Turn the music up? Lol

I like my clattery noisy diesel, and my chav cannon bwarp.

Makes me feel like a rebel.

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - strictly_perv - 24-04-2012

I love the on boost sound revving over 5k from the open filter and straight through to a tiny tiny back box lol
It's just the idle that sounds clattery, more than most 306's due to the lack of sound deadening

Thinking of putting something like this in plat of the original bonnet under lay

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Dan! - 24-04-2012

Probably is down to the lack of bonnet lining, but also check your pump isnt too far advanced because they make a right racket when they are lol

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - 4WayDiablo - 24-04-2012

Could be a good option. Also raising your idle might help too

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - strictly_perv - 24-04-2012

I think the timings as it should be, never been touched and runs spot on.
I don't wanna touch the idle as i've just got it dead on 1k ninja

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Dan! - 24-04-2012

Well that might be something to do with it lol I know it can be helped when your running alot of fuel, but a 1000rpm idle will sound a fair bit louder than most standard ones at like 750/800rpm Tongue

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - silverzx - 24-04-2012

Man up mate. Isn't a lot to be done. Sad

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - strictly_perv - 24-04-2012

I always thought the idle was meant to be 1000rpm
For some reason the RPM gauge won't read below 1000rpm and having a worn fork bush any lower revs and it's juddery, that will be sorted soon though when the weather clears

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - 4WayDiablo - 24-04-2012

Iirc mot idle says something like 950 to 1050 lol

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Dan! - 24-04-2012

Diesels should idle at around 800rpm

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Dave - 24-04-2012

20° static advance for some clatter, get on!!

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - mark_airey - 24-04-2012

Dave Wrote:20° static advance for some clatter, get on!!

lol and again.............FCS last year, yours sounded like a passing train when it was cold lmao

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Dave - 24-04-2012

lol!!! Oh yeh forgot about that, was was umm about 9° static advance

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - darrenjlobb - 24-04-2012

Lol wasnt daves a tooth out last year at fcs lol? didnt even realise at the time rofl.

Diesel knock ftw anyway, nothing like the noises of a cold idi on a cold fresh morning.

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Jonny b - 24-04-2012

mi16 it whistle sound lovely on tickover then ha ha

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - darrenjlobb - 24-04-2012

I hate petrols, Think ive stalled it everytime i stop at a junction!

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Diggers - 24-04-2012

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Jonny b - 24-04-2012

darrenjlobb Wrote:I hate petrols, Think ive stalled it everytime i stop at a junction!

ha ha 5k drop the clutch!! wont stall then lol

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - strictly_perv - 24-04-2012

That wasn't mine, it was a replica model lol.
Hmm i'll give the sound deadening a go and see what happens.

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Dave - 24-04-2012

Ive stalled mine from a 5k dropped clutch before Sad revs leads to a false sence of security thinking you have positive mani pressure... yeh darren it was a tooth out, which is about 8-9° or something

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Poodle - 24-04-2012

HDi engine cover could well work fella, a lot of the nosie is from the ignition right, which will be deadened a fair bit if you insulate the top of the engine.

That's what I thought... Will the throttle arm hit it though?

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Dave - 24-04-2012

You get that jammed with govmod... damn wouldnt be good for your engine screaming its guts out Wink

They are noisy because they're single pop injectors, you could piss about with the dynamic advance system and get it flat as hell on idle, or get the bosch that lets advance off with load.

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Poodle - 25-04-2012

So adjust the mounts so it sits a bit better. Wink

Re: Quieter diesel clatter? - Dave - 25-04-2012

Yeh well the clatter is just injection happening before TDC, if you adjust the pump so it happens after TDC you get much less power, but its fookin quiet...
