Towing a car with no MOT or Tax - Grant - 23-04-2012

Right, to cut a long story short, myself and Niall are buying a car to break, but as the title suggests, it has no tax or test.

We were thinking of doing the sneaky ninja thing of getting the RAC to tow it back for us, by us swapping the ecu for a fryed one i have laying around....

But the question is:

Can the car legally be towed on a public highway on an A-frame or similar with no tax or test?

My point of view is that a small trailer needs no MOT, so why would a car be different if only two wheels are in contact with the ground?

But that is just me taking a guess, has anyone had experience with this?

Thanks!

Was just about to phone you about this! Rac is a no no. Just looked and they will refuse to tow a untaxed/unmotd car.

Re: Towing a car with no MOT or Tax - Curt - 23-04-2012

As far as I understand, as long as 2 wheels are off the ground it's fine

Re: Towing a car with no MOT or Tax - Dum-Dum - 23-04-2012

law says any vehicle on the road must have tax/mot/insurance even if its not being driven.

Re: Towing a car with no MOT or Tax - Scott - 23-04-2012

^^ Towing on an a-frame or such like won't be legal, you need to get towed properly Smile

Re: Towing a car with no MOT or Tax - Grant - 23-04-2012

But when does the vehicle become a trailer. To take it to an extreme, look at the geezer on ebay who turned a 106 into a trailer, and towed it on his 106. Silly i know, but where do the boundaries lie?

Only needs insurance if it's going to a prebooked mot but we won't get away with driving 40 miles to a test.

All wheels need to be off the road, then it doesn't to be t&t

So we book it in at a string of MOT stations between there and here? ninja lol

So it looks like we would have to get it flatbedded?

Correct, can't have any bits touching the tarmac.

Maybe we should all chip in and buy a 306oc flatbed.. I think it would get used plenty.

Nah dont want to risk donating my trailer money to some new wheels for the political leaders of this forum...

Thats quite a reasonable rate for trailer hire, just need to find someone who can tow a trailer on their liscence... whistle

What?

Any car on the road needs insurance mate regardless of weather its being driven or its parked on the road outside and the insurance ran out while you were on holiday.

Just looked at the weights of both vehicles. Providing that trailer is under a tonne (1060kg to be precise) you can tow it on your licence in the van Smile

Re: Towing a car with no MOT or Tax - Grant - 23-04-2012

What niall is saying is if we book it in for an MOT we would only need to insure it...

Not a vehicle only needs insurance if its going to an MOT lol

Sorry I meant it only needs insurance. Doesn't need mot and tax in that scenario.

Re: Towing a car with no MOT or Tax - Niall - 23-04-2012

Do I need a special driving licence to tow?

You must hold a full driving licence to to drive vehicle and trailer combinations weighing up to 8.25 tonnes. However, if you passed your test after January 1, 1997 then these restrictions apply:

Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and no more than eight passenger seats (ie: officially dubbed Category B vehicles and are typical cars) with a 750kg trailer (4.25 tonnes total Maximum Authorised Mass or MAM).
Category B vehicles with larger trailers i.e. more than 750kg, provided that the combined Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and the gross MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle.
Vehicles over 3500kg MAM are classified as large goods vehicles.
To be able to tow combinations outside this ruling requires the passing of an additional test.
