injector noise - sherman306 - 04-03-2015

has anyone got any videos of bad injector noise as I think this could be the cause of my loud engine and if the injectors are making this noise do they do it all the time or come and go?

RE: injector noise - shervo - 04-03-2015

Pretty sure when injectors start to 'tick' the noise goes away at 2,500 RPM. Someone will confirm this though.

RE: injector noise - sherman306 - 04-03-2015

ah not good my noise gets worse the more I cain it haha

RE: injector noise - pugdan95 - 04-03-2015

I'm pretty sure my injectors are on the way out tick like f*ck when i boot it

RE: injector noise - Toms306 - 04-03-2015

More like 3.25k when injector tick stops, its when the pre-injection stops.

Can hear the standard tick on this vid (over the bangin' choonz even!) and note how it stops dead at 3250rpm, if yours don't then I'd suggest theres something else wrong.

RE: injector noise - Seb_Ryan - 04-03-2015

Yeah ticky injections tend to stop at about 2.5 3k ish.

If its all the time id assume it would be valves/timing side of things

RE: injector noise - sherman306 - 04-03-2015

hmm well I bought the car properly cheap because it was knocking since then ive put stage 1+ map on and done 8000 miles of well not slow driving and it hasn't got even the slightest bit worse ill really try and listen out for what revs it does it on the way home today, if it isn't injectors has anyone else got any other ides what it could be?

RE: injector noise - Seb_Ryan - 04-03-2015

As i said above.. But get a video up of the noise.. Could be a few things

RE: injector noise - sherman306 - 04-03-2015

just took it for blast the tick/knock stops at 3k Smile injectors then haha

RE: injector noise - cully - 04-03-2015

run some two stroke oil 200ml per tank fill up should quieten them a little Wink

RE: injector noise - Toms306 - 04-03-2015

Is the 2 stroke oil alright for CR stuff, and what does it actually do? Someone on Ford OC recommended I try some.... Confused

RE: injector noise - sherman306 - 04-03-2015

ill give that a go mate

I would also like to know this. Is there any real benfit to running it? Does it matter what quality two stroke you use?

RE: injector noise - Poodle - 04-03-2015

Seems to be fairly popular on tdoc, some even claim they've gained mpg.

RE: injector noise - sherman306 - 04-03-2015

if I was to change the injectors is it more than likely that all 4 need doing or is it usual just one or two problem ones?

RE: injector noise - Poodle - 04-03-2015

All four.

RE: injector noise - shervo - 04-03-2015

Im still abit worried to try it in mine haha

RE: injector noise - Seb_Ryan - 04-03-2015

With 2 stroke it doesnt matter as long as its low ash

RE: injector noise - cully - 04-03-2015

have been running two stroke oil in my HDi's since ive had them
like i say 200ml per tank full of fuel seems to improve mpg and quieten the engine a little Wink

added benefit is the two stroke will clean the injectors too allegedly

cheaper the better two stroke oil
low ash mineral I'm using

So is it noticeably better than using things like redex?

Hmm, might give t a go then. Smile

RE: injector noise - lolsteve - 04-03-2015

Used to get the Wilko low ash stuff irrc, was cheap and helped quieten them a bit.
Adding Biodiesel really helped shut them up, could defiantly tell the difference in noise when I was back to just using pump diesel

However biodiesel is one of this risky things that some say the CR system doesn't like it as it's too thick. I used it for 2 years and had nothing explode on me, just a clogged FPR which was fixed with a quick blast of wd40. However this may not be the case for everyone so dont just assume bio is a-okay

RE: injector noise - Bassman85 - 05-03-2015

I used to run two stroke oil in my mk4 golf tdi non pd and i swore by it. I wasn't sure about using it in the hdi, my injectors are well noisey so I'll definately be picking a bottle up in the morning. Just out of interest, do the injectirs finally fail or they just stay noisey and not effect the running?

RE: injector noise - cully - 05-03-2015

morisons supermarket pump diesel contains a higher quantity of biodiesel which i put down to killing a set of my injectors be warned

bio diesel has a greater cleaning effect which blocked my injectors causing a lumpy running like on 3 cylinders

RE: injector noise - Poodle - 05-03-2015

As a rule injectors will just stay noisy and not affect running, however it is still possible for them to cause issues later on, same as anything really.

I thought so, just put up with the noise then Sad

RE: injector noise - Magenta Sunset - 07-06-2015

quick Q.
would this be related to the '2-stage' injector pump.?
(think Haynes describe it as a 3rd pump piston operating for acceleraton)

RE: injector noise - 306clot - 08-06-2015

When i changed my injectors for some 076 ones, i needed a diesel specialist to come out and remove one of the injectors as it was seized solid, we talked about the ticking and he stated that my old ones were indeed corroded inside witch would have reduced their performance but however even brand new injectors will tick due to the design of a diesel common rail injector, the more fuel that they are required to inject and the quicker the louder they will get.

For example he just had some brand new tractor ones fitted and he said they are nearly deafening when up close, thats just the way they are. Some manufactures just counteract the problem with lots of sound ending

Thanks for the post Jake, it's been stated before but it really helps to have people like yourself reinforce the message with informative posts like that.

RE: injector noise - Ruan - 09-06-2015

There is a certain noise that happens with these injectors and after listening to a few of them, I'm now wondering if infact isn't the injector itself, it's actually the preinjection duration being too long - that's what causes that "marbling" noise or "tacking" noise which I *think* is an overly large pre-injection, I can only assume this is due to either weak solenoids not able to pull the valve back fast enough, causing an oversized pre-injection.

This would explain why it immediately shuts up at ~3000rpm since it suddenly turns off.
