Sump gasket replacement - Matt - 23-01-2015
Will be replacing the gasket on the sump come service day, will this stuff do the job?

It's cheap and I'm struggling to find the right gasket online (I can only use PayPal to buy shit, so limited to eBay) and I have a few gaskets to fix so could be used for the rest.
Just don't know how this and oil/heat is gunna work?
It's for the dt if that makes a difference

What sump is it - steel or alloy?
Alloy sumps will seal fine with a good quality RTV providing that you ensure that both faces are completely degreased and that there's no oil that'll contaminate it before the sealant fully sets. With the engine in the car, that'll mean degreasing as much of the inside of the block as you can too, as the oil will run down otherwise.
Steel sumps can be much more problematic and ideally need a proper good quality gasket - Payen preferably. Even then, if they're warped which they often are if they've taken a hit or been removed heavy handedly, you'll struggle to get them to seal perfectly and is why I tend to end up swapping to alloy sumps.

How do I find out if it's alloy or steel? All I know is it's leaking a lot of oil aha
