1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Chris_90 - 12-12-2014 So I bought a xsara picasso 1.6 hdi for the wife it had a blown turbo got it mega cheap, I've sorted all the relevant stuff that goes with changing the turbo on this engine and now finished and on the road. The issue I'm having is starting from cold it takes abit longer than what's normal and when it does fire throws a bit of white smoke out, bit of revs it clears but has a lumpy idle, once your moving it doesn't effect the way it drives pulls nice etc and once warm it starts up straight away with out issue. I'm thinking injectors? Am I right in believing these don't use the glow plugs unless it's mega cold? Anything else it could be? RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - ash23 - 12-12-2014 i would say injectors. possibility the nozzles need a clean as gummed up with oil residue? im off to detons tomorrow some time you want me to pick a set up? Arnt they coded to the car? And how big are your pockets? ![]() ![]() RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - ash23 - 12-12-2014 let me know your numbers? very deep ![]() RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Toms306 - 12-12-2014 I'd get the Citroen diag's to check it tbh... Have you checked around the top of the injectors? They're known to leak which is one of the contributing factors to the turbo failures. RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Chris_90 - 12-12-2014 Ash I'll text you Tom all injectors been out reground the injector seats and re sealed as one of the injectors was leaking bad carbon every were ![]() RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Toms306 - 12-12-2014 That probably explains the turbo popping then... RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Chris_90 - 12-12-2014 (12-12-2014, 11:24 AM)Toms306 Wrote: That probably explains the turbo popping then... Possibly, had sump off clean it all out wasn't that bad tbh, hopefully won't have any more issues. Any one else shed any light on this? RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Toms306 - 12-12-2014 Fair enough, hopefully be ok as you've done it properly. I've already shed light on it though, its a complex electronic controlled system so you need proper diags for it lol. Is there any free ELM software for these like there's FORScan and ELMConfig for the Focus. Haven't got anything I can run diagnostics on, and I don't wanna be paying £30-40 a go, I'll get injectors out and get them tested. RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Toms306 - 12-12-2014 Have you got a smart phone? I think you can use ELM with Bluetooth? RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Chris_90 - 12-12-2014 Yer got smart phone might be something to look in to. Do you know if I replace the injectors with different ones will I need to recode them? RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Toms306 - 12-12-2014 I'm not 100% on this but I understand the injectors on these aren't coded, however the ECU correction values need to be reset so it can 'learn' the new injectors. RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Chris_90 - 16-12-2014 Does any one know if these use glow plugs to help them start even if the light doesn't come on? RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Paul_13 - 16-12-2014 I do believe they only come on at a certain temperature RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Chris_90 - 16-12-2014 (16-12-2014, 10:53 AM)Paul_13 Wrote: I do believe they only come on at a certain temperature Yer that's my thinking but didn't no as that could contribute to the longer starting on first start. RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Chris_90 - 19-01-2015 Bump up on this, problem is getting worse had injectors tested and all came back fine, so that's ruled out.... Any more suggestions?? As it stands at min I'm out of ideas and it's going to be a garage job to sort ![]() RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue - Toms306 - 19-01-2015 You really need diagnostics with modern cars... They do use glow plugs even if the light isn't on, yeah, but its not for very long. You should also see the light at least flash on at these temps now. RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Chris_90 - 10-02-2015 This is now fixed turned out to be glow plugs even tho I was under the understanding they don't use them till minus temps...... Now starts on the first turn ![]() Any way next problem turbo failure (again) so I'm unsure what's caused this turbo to go it's passing oil, my only two thoughts are that it's a cheap shitty turbo (was bought off ebay the cartridge was £89) or the fact I de cat it why it was off possibly causing the turbo to over speed? When the turbo was replaced the correct procedure for this engine was followed with sump being removed new oil pick up point, new high pressure line etc etc so can't see that being at fault. RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - bashbarnard - 10-02-2015 It will be shitty turbo. That's ridiculously cheap. Put q good one on there. Job done. RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Toms306 - 10-02-2015 You'll never clear all of the carbon out of a DV6 with turbo failure...it's new engine time really unless you strip the whole lot down... De-cat won't make a difference to the turbo, lots of people run them. Your cheap turbo parts may not have helped though lol, £89? Christ... ![]() RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Chris_90 - 10-02-2015 Was just the cartridge not a full turbo, there is no carbon in the oil when I removed the sump.it was very clean looked like it's been serviced regular. Is it worth getting the original naffed turbo cartridge rebuilt or shall I just go new but from a decent turbo place? Edit just rung Citroen £600 for new turbo with a £400 surcharge any one recommend a decent turbo place? RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Toms306 - 10-02-2015 I'd get a recon'd turbo personally, should be about £300 or so, wouldn't for a brand new Chinese shit one. But that's not too bad a price from Citroen, cheaper than a DPF! ![]() RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Chris_90 - 10-02-2015 Cheapest I've found so far is £324 all in. But debateing if it's worth upgrading to the 110bhp vnt turbo, emailed a mapper to see if it's possible to map them to the 90 bhp ecu, as the 90bhp turbo is wastegate but still vacuum operated. So should be possible and they bolt on straight to manifold and cat/dpf. That way more power from a stage 1 as well because get 140bhp fromantic the 110bhp turbo but only 115bhp from the standard turbo. RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Toms306 - 10-02-2015 That sounds like a reasonable price to me. No idea how easy it is to upgrade to the 110 turbo but it'd good as you're changing it anyway. It will work but the price on mapping is £400 so that's a no go, wouldn't be bad if i was fitting a £50 gt20v but a £324 turbo plus mapping gets silly money. RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Frosty - 10-02-2015 Once these engines have had turbo issues they are never the same and seem to keep playing up RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Chris_90 - 10-02-2015 (10-02-2015, 06:37 PM)Frosty Wrote: Once these engines have had turbo issues they are never the same and seem to keep playing up That fills me with confidence ![]() Re: RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Seb_Ryan - 10-02-2015 (10-02-2015, 06:37 PM)Frosty Wrote: Once these engines have had turbo issues they are never the same and seem to keep playing up Yeah this.. Mate of mine had one in a focus, turbo went, had a new one fitted at ford at a silly price, then 2 months later it went again lol RE: 1.6 hdi starting issue FIXED now next problem :( - Toms306 - 10-02-2015 I've already tried telling Chris this... ![]() But anyway - £400 for mapping...where the hell is that!? |
