s16 won't run - Daitch - 03-12-2014

Hi there! The rev counter on my s16 has just stopped working. At the same time this has happened the car will barely run above tickover. Do you think the ecu doesn't know what the revs are therefore it doesn't know what fuel and air to feed into the engine? Where is the sender for the rev counter? Can't find it in the Haynes manual.

Theres a speed sensor on the back of the gearbox by the diff, sometimes they go naff this is what feeds the rev counter
As far as I know if that's gone it shouldn't affect the ECU, perhaps look at the MAP sensor, Idle control or the throttle sensor...

IIRC MAP is intop of the manifold, ICV is on the back of the manifold near the rear side of where the throttle body mounts, throttle position is on the throttle body the bar that is attached to the throttle body butterfly goes through it at one end.

I had a map sensor go on a gti6 before and the car would run very badly(lumpy), rev up and down then splutter then stall...

Were you driving the car recently? the ICV tends to drop reds and stall when the clutch is dipped in the lead up to failing.

Speed sensor in the diff provides a speed...not RPM!!

I can't recall if the S16 has a crank or cam sensor, but it's most likely to be one of those and it would indeed have an influence on the cars ability to run.

yep I appoligise, a late night moment of dumbness Rolleyes

I don't believe the s16 ran a cam sensor

yes they did.

map is onboard the ecu.

rpm is direct from ecu, does not rely on a sensor directly to drive the tacho, however without a tdc thr engine wint run anyway.

sounds like possible vac pipe issue, theres lots on them.
