Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - Tmcilvar - 11-11-2014

To get the ball rolling, I used to own a Citroen xantia, sold it to buy this one off itemAngel A 1992 peugeot 405 straight diesel "style" edition with 100k on the clock and has a gti steering wheel and gti wheels (factory extra?), and im currently the second owner from new.. The rarity that I found was that, the car seems to be rust repellent!Inlove Underneath the boot floor, nothing just caked on mud which scrapped off just shows you body sealer, chassis legs, sills nothing. So anyway £220 later and shes home! I bought the car in mid april planning on dropping the nad and replacing it with a td da8 engine, but time and money didn't allow so the car sat in my shed until now where I want to finish it and have it on the road before christmas.. Anyway pictures, I currently drive a phase 1 diablo red dturbo which I bought on my placement in southern england but it needs a few bits of tlc so planning on fixing it through the winter and driving the 405.

When I bought her;

Then started stripping;[Image: 10313698_10202868346247784_1486452373812...9aa34d.jpg]

And how it currently sits in my shed;

And my daily (*Awaits hate on how low and shit looking it is*);

Collecting the xantia engine, (just for lolz);

Any who, the plans in my head so far are, keep the standard wheels, fit the DHX xantia engine with inlet mani and nearly new valeo clutch (WIN) I bought for £60, 11mm bosch and td04, yes I know not really breaking any new records but should hopefully be 180bhp which should upset quite a few people!

Thanks, any opinons or suggestions?

I'd stick some hdi rods in there.
It will lessen the chance of the rods popping out the block and saying hello

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - madwelshman - 13-11-2014

I've had 2 405's, a 1.9GL and a 1.9 GTX. Lovely cars, smooth, nice and comfy for long distance. The GTX was a decent performer as well, surprised a few cars (and me!).

Will

£220? bargain!

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - madwelshman - 13-11-2014

Agreed. On to a winner from the start at that money.

looking great! nice to see a 405 get some loving done!

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - Tmcilvar - 17-11-2014

Well I have some bad news, and some good news!Dodgy Bad news first as usual, unfortunately I crashed and completed destroyed my daily, word of warning for people that cancel out the brake compensator on the rear of 306's, ITS A VERY BAD IDEA IN A SUDDEN BRAKE SITUATION!! Came into a tight right hand corner at 60mph, literally about 100 degrees as it turned back on itself, I underestimated the corner suddenly applied the brakes back end locked up, and slid into a crash barrier at 50mph! The 306 stood it well, and the airbag deployed but is completely twisted, so once stripped of her shinys, she will be made into bean tinsNospeak The good news, is that it will give me boot up the backside to get 405 finished so have the engine out of my daily into the 405 because its running 100% as i want to pull the dhx engine apart to check the head, wear etc.. and check if the myth is true that they come with hdi rods from standardAngel

Anyway, Im looking to upgrade the brakes on the front, because there solid disc's! I tried 306 dturbo calipers but the vent discs sat solid against hub, so maybe thinking of trying 405 dturbo hubs from the newer models Ie 1996..[Image: 10296718_10202868344167732_9753989748884...5c4b64.jpg]

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - bashbarnard - 17-11-2014

That really sucks. Sorry to hear it. On the other hand though its a win for the 405. Thread title should be. Oh crap I crashed heres the replacement

Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - Sambarker - 17-11-2014

I have exactly the same issue on my 305 as they share the same front hub as the 405.

I'm planning on using citroen c5 front hubs with 407 front calipers

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - madwelshman - 17-11-2014

Oh damn, sorry to hear that. At least you managed to walk away from it, even if the 306 didn't.
Still like you say, sometimes it takes unfortunate events like this to gee ourselves up and get other things done.

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - zx_volcane - 17-11-2014

Wowza, lucky to walk away form a crash like that, glad you're ok

A stark warning to anyone thinking that running without a compensator on the rear brakes is a good idea!

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - Grant - 17-11-2014

As said, lucky with that crash! But silver lining that you now have more motivation to get on with the new daily Smile

Keep us updated!

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - JamesPT - 17-11-2014

Good to see your fine, Bud news there... And I'm gonna check my Brake compensator!.. Last time I seen it, it was totally rushed out! I doubt it even works.

Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - Sambarker - 17-11-2014

I got rid of the rear compensator on the c15 rear axle i fitted to the 305, luckily the 305 has never been quick or agile enough to catch me out....yet

When it's pushing 200bhp+ I plan on perhaps fitting a bias valve on the brake line to the rears to even it out a bit

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - procta - 17-11-2014

bad crac on the 306 buying the barrier, but at least you can pull off some of the useable spares from it.

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - Tmcilvar - 17-11-2014

Thanks lads, literally when it happened, I just laughed and pushed the car into a gateway and phoned my dad to come and lift the car. But at the end of the day nobody was hurt, well except for my ego haha.. Unfortunately due to circumstances, im having to put it the shitty stage 1 tuned engine with a lucas in to get the 405 on the road, as im stuck with no car, and being a student, no money either.

@sambarker- what are you for doing with the master cylinder once you change to 406 brakes? Presumably your going for brembo's? Id like to change to 266mm brakes the same as a 306 hdi, but again they wont fit, so need to find out if even just 406 td calipers are 266mm because with slight use the solid discs and small calipears they will heat up and lose efficiency within no time, especially when Il be twice the power of the nad..

Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - Sambarker - 17-11-2014

It's 407 calipers I'm fitting not 406 calipers. They are 283mm so will just use a 306 gti6 master cylinder

It would seem the 405 and 305 have different master cylinder setups, for the master cylinder in the 405, is at 90degrees and sits behind the bulk head.. (Il get pictures tomorrow)

RE: Peugeot 405 Retro Wintercar.. - Tmcilvar - 01-12-2014

Well, I havent updated this in a while.. So i got the DHX Xantia built up a with a lucas pump and a spare t2 I had laying around, as i need this on the road asap! I have ran into a snag with the wiring, as obviously the 306 loom doesnt plug and play, Im using the current loom that came with the 405 but running in snags, as theres a plug and o ring connector which i dont have a clue where it goes as i took the previous engine out over 6 months ago.. So pictures!

Engine built; [Image: 10799658_10204368714596055_965534848_n_zps246e484e.jpg]

How she sits atm; [Image: 10822249_10204368714196045_881994148_n_zps30fc4b7e.jpg]

And wiring bits, the loom and the two mysterious wiresConfused If anyone has any pictures or explanations on how the done there looms on a 205 conversion to xud9 it would be appreciated highly!ThumbsUp

And, saddly enough I found rustDodgy but not on the chassis or panels of the car.. more like the sunroof rails stone rotten! I presume, the seals in the sunroof went from the car sitting up for 3 years, water got in and laying in the rails and mounts and caused this!..

So much approval for the engine crane in the last photo.

Good work, should be a epic barge when done! Smile
