1.9 TD Maintenance and queries - Orta - 20-06-2014

Hi All,

I had a 1.9 DTurbo-S about 8 years ago (S905 DDL if anyone's seen it since, it's still on the road according to DVLA).

My thinking since then has always been have a fast diesel and commute using this. However my thinking is now of having two vehicles, a fast estate car (Need an estate) petrol (Thinking 3.2 V6 Passat, Octavia Vrs etc.) and having a DTurbo to commute. This is a win all around as I have an estate, I have a fast car, and I can satisfy my endless love of 306s (I'm on my third).

However my concerns are that, yes I can buy a decent late Phase 2 DTurbo for £600-800, but then I'm paying £200+ to tax it and it's potentially going to be unreliable. The reason I figured a 1.9 might be better than the HDi is the potential to work on it myself.

I'm what you would call a novice but I have a basic understand of how a motor vehicle works. How easy are the 1.9s to..
1). Service yourself
2). Conduct most basic repairs (What goes mostly on these?)
3). I take it parts of plentiful and cheap also?

Cheap as they come really

I don't tend to use quality oils just change it every 6k

If you get a Bosch pump you can run pure veg for even more savings

Main things I would say are head gasket and axle rest is just what any other car would have

How much are these fabled "bosch pumps" and is it a big job to fit? (IE: DIY pos, or short work for a trained mechanic... so cheap?)

And it can seriously run on pure veg fat without any other modifications?

How much would a Head Gasket cost to put right?

Headgasket is pretty unlikely to happen but it isn't unheard of so worth checking when buying

The pump fuel lines and injectors can be had for around £80 it involves taking off the cambelt but it's straight forward

Yes as long as it is a Bosch fuel pump poar it straight into the tank just have to change the fuel filter more often and in colder weather run 60% veg 40% diesel

How would I tell by looking at it whether it had Bosch pump? And any recommendations for source of veg oil?

Asda tesco ect usually hae offers on or most cash and carets have it for 80ppl if not cheaper

That's a Bosch pump the circled silver UFO part is the easiest way to tell

Cool cheers buddy. Think I'm gonna find a tidy 3 door to play around with the bodywork (gti replica!) and run it on veg fat!! Is it literally vegetable oil it runs on, not sunflower oil etc.

And you literally just pour this stuff into your fuel tank and away it goes??

Sunflower oil is slightly better but sometimes a few pence more

Veg, sunflower, rapeseed etc. Off the shelf/cooking stuff.

just dont get anything with palm oil in it.. its gel temperature is lower and hence its more likely to solidify in your lines in colder weather...

i know this for experience, and its a painful one lol

i would hazard a guess you want to be running 50/50 at anything below 3 degrees..

Oh, that cold? I was expecting you to say like 5-10 degrees. So it's fine 100% veg oil all the way down to say; below 5 degrees.

Keeping the car in the garage at a higher temperature would presumably be ok as well? As long as when the car is exposed to the car the engine would be running?

Just as a census as well who on here is running the veg oil setup?

No thats a lucas pump.

Also i wouldnt worry about veg like that, unless the snow is falling veg will be fine. I have used it right through winter before with no issues, although i do tend to water it down with diesel/petrol to ease starting.

Thing about veg is everyone has a different story to tell based on their experiences.
Best thing you can do is try it.
The 60%/40% mix is a safe bet. You wont (should not) have any problems.
Then as you get a better understanding of veg running you can vary the mix.

Or you can just not bother and go 100% all year round.
You may not have issues.
Depends very much on the car, it's condition, the condition of the tank, strainer, filters and hoses fittings.

One thing about veg is that at some point you will have some sort of a problem.

Some wise words I think. But I'm planning on grabbing a dturbo for £500 notes so if it goes wrong it's not the end of the world! As a side note will the flat non turbo diesel run on veg oil as well?

yup, bosch tended to be earlier ones... although pug suffered from "whatever the hell we had on the shelf at the time" just like my suzuki had

Yes 405 do have xud d turbo engines and I have never seen one that Dosent have a Bosch pump as standard

Yeah I know it's a flatty but could live with it if I did have a Bosch!

So the 405 would be fine to run on veg oil without issue?

And yeah I've seen that thread would fancy it but don't want any dash out jobs...

The Bosch pumps on the 405's were electronically controlled. Still fine to run veg oil but you cant tune them for more power. Not sure if that would be an issue for you.

I think you might mean 406, the old 405 derv lumps are the same as the 306
