This is what I went for in the end. It's a bridge camera much better than any compact. I love it. I've taken some great photos with it at many shows.
Although fcs the memory card decided it didn't want to save pictures.

Get a decent bridge camera. You'll have more options and settings to play with, with an easier to hold but which is also still compact enough to easily carry around. I had a Panasonic Lumix and that was great.
They're also called superzooms, which, as the name suggests, means they usually have great optical zoom. Which makes them nice and versatile.

Can't stand bridge cameras - worst of both worlds
None of the real benefits of a proper dslr combined with being too bulky to keep on you
Much better off with a high end compact
Plus they look incredibly silly in anthing other than children's tiny hands

Down to opinion at the end of the day, I can't stand compacts. To be honest, doesn't matter what it looks like, the results are what matter. I've never felt the need for a compact. If I'm out and about and need to snap something, I have my phone. If I'm doing or going anywhere interesting, I'll have my dSLR on me.

Alot of the time i use my phone, but if i purposely go out to take pictures then its my Pentax K100D Super with the standard 18-55mm lens and then i carry around the Sigma 55-200mm just incase :p

i've currently got a fuji s3 pro, full dslr with a nikkon lens (can't remember for the life of me what it is but it does some nice zoom, and can do good macro stuff so i'm happy)
had a fuji 3500s bridge before that, bought it at the beginning of uni, and loved it, may get the newer equivalent tbh, the s3 is good, but it's not exactly very useful as a point and shoot...lol
i also agree with curt, i can't stand compacts....at all

I'd disagree totally. Obviously a proper DSLR is better but cost at least twice as much, nobody keeps a camera with them "just in case" these days as we all have mobile phones with good cameras so if your taking a camera out its not too much of a problem if it big. I can fit my Finepix in my pockets anyway. Compacts tend to be little better than mobile phone cameras.
You also get a substantial optical zoom (30x on mine and a good range of adjustability, certainly enough to be able to shoot in almost pitch blackness and also do light painting with.
For the OP try and make sure you get something you can screw a tripod into the bottom of as that makes a big difference, no more worries about shaky hands especially with longer exposures and a £10 ebay tripod is fine for most situations.

Compacts are going to virtually disappear over the next few years i reckon for this reason. Anyone who wants to take great photos uses a DSLR. Anyone who just wants to take a quick pic when they are out and about uses their phone!

It's certainly going that way. I personally hate using my phone... It's a decent camera, but when I know I can do better, it annoys me. It's just too damn convenient.

A bridge camera is just a compact with a longer optical zoom wrapped up in a silly 0.5x dslr like form factor.
Same small sensor size and image quality, lack of real viewfinder and most annoying of all shutter lag.
How often does anyone really need a long lens? I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the time people shoot towards the wider end of the spectrum unless they're a twitcher or just like taking pics of people from afar :p

I use a Panasonic Lumix compact at the moment, Though I use mine on MTB rides more than car stuff so I need something compact and sturdy, The Phone takes great pics (Sony experia z) but CBA with touch screen bollocks when I'm wet and muddy.

Again, it's down to opinion whether or not that's a negative. I like the fact that they're larger than a compact, as instead of stupid menus to change things, you have actual physical buttons. It's also a good way to start out and then move on to a dSLR. The feel of a camera is a big thing for me, and I've never used a nice compact.

Some lower end dSLRs don't have "real" viewfinders or at least 100% ones. But having one at all is better than none IMO, hate using live view unless it's strictly necessary. They do, generally, offer more manual options and longer exposure settings, too.

Often. Not for taking pictures of stationary cars, obviously. But I take pictures of everything, I love track photography and nature etc. This is where a bridge comes into it's own, because you have the ability to do everything in one without carrying around an array of expensive lenses. Not everyone wants to/can do that.
This doesn't apply to me obviously, because I now have my dSLR but it used to.
I just think they're a good compromise for people starting out or with more than a very casual interest. But as I said previously, it's all down to opinion
