Xs Reviews? - underground375 - 30-10-2013
Hi all tempted to buy myself a 2000 1.8 Xs as my insurance is not affected when it comes to the d turbo.
Just need a bit more information on these cars, differences with the Xs and Xsi power gains reliability, and what people think about the engine and model of the car? What is worlth etc

The 1.8 is a much better engine than the xsi engine. For a start, its quite a bit lighter so the car feels a lot more nimble. Also, the 1.8 engine is much revvier than the 2.0 and i genuinely think that the extra few BHP on the xsi isn't worth it. I happily kept up with XSIs all day long in my 1.8! I think the weight difference offsets the slight power gain of the xsi engine.

Xs IMO was the best 306 peugeot did. As Niall says, the xsi is a waste of time, for the reasons stated above...

Does anyone now of the power gains if it was remapped? From the top of my head didn't the 1.8 have 119bhp as standard? seems a little low for the size of engine and valves?

1.8 FTW!! I had one in a Meridian, most reliable car I ever had! My mate had one in an XS and had no problems in about 4 years (until someone drove into it!). I'd have another if they didn't drink so much lol.
Only issues they seem to get are ICV and coil pack...
Edit - The 1.8 16v was 112bhp standard, which yes, is terrible considering what they drink lol. I liked the power delivery though, nicer than turbo diesel delivery imo. A remap won't give you much gain due to being NA....you'd need some more mods to make it worthwhile.
Also if you are getting one, make sure it's before Y reg, the tax gets expensive after that!

On paper they are 112bhp but they mostly all roll a fair bit more. It was rumoured that peugeot dropped the figures of them so that there was a big gap between the XS and XSI

Just like how they detuned the Xud to 92? as we all know the gains that can be done without any money spent! Yeah ive seen the mpg pretty shocking. :O

Didn't rowells pull 120 something on rollers? Iirc he had the '6 mani on?

Just been researching the 3 engines. You have the 1.8 16v Xs at 112bhp 34mpg, the 2.0 16v Xsi at 135bhp 30mpg, but what makes the gti run a 2.0 16v at 167bhp :O They a different engine to the Xsi one?

Gti is more powerful due to a better flowing head, higher compression and harmonised manifolds

The XSi head uses larger valves, But the GTi has better cams, Inlet and exhaust manifolds, (the inlet works very well) higher compression and a better ECU

A few have fitted the gti head to the 1.8 bottom end with good results but the shitty 1.8 ecu can't really cope. If you was to do that but go aftermarket management, I think you would see some quite substantial gains.

Hmm so gti head with the inlet manifold to match, then reprogram the ecu? Or go for a gti ecu and fiddle with that? Does anyone no if the TBs where different in size?

Basically, get an entire GTI6 engine setup.. then put the 1.8 bottom end on and get it mapped up, job jobbed

1.8 Engine mods to that extent should end up costing more than a complete GTi6 as a whole

Yeah ive been doing more research. As they say research is key. So the plan would be a full gti6 engine conversion with the 6 speed gear box/ ecu to match.

Do I need the wiring loom or is it a simple conversion?

My 1.8 XS is probably one of my favourite cars (that I have owned)
In the first year of ownership I was 18/19 and the insurance covered me for new alloys, lowering and an induction kit. I should have stopped there, because it was good on fuel, reliable and easy to work on / service.
I miss that car!
