Head skimming - Niall - 27-02-2012 As you probably know, I'm starting rebuilding a spare head for my 1.8. The car it came off of was running really well with no overheating or signs of gasket failure. Do you reckon it's still worth getting a very light skim done on it before I start work on it? Re: Head skimming - Connor - 27-02-2012 Skim and pressure test personally Head skimming - Jonny b - 27-02-2012 I would skim it regardless bud Head skimming - Jonny b - 27-02-2012 I know a man ha ha Re: Head skimming - Niall - 27-02-2012 Jonny b Wrote:I know a man ha ha Really? Reckon you could sort us out mates rates? Haha Re: Head skimming - Ruan - 27-02-2012 Absolutely. Don't bother putting it on without just a skim to save money, if it's cracked or it doesn't seal right, you'll kick yourself... Costs £60 for an XUD9 head for pressure test and skim, which is more difficult to do because of the Inconel PCCs. Re: Head skimming - Niall - 27-02-2012 Right will get it done then. Payday tonight so I can start ordering all the belts gaskets, water pump ect ect ![]() Head skimming - Jonny b - 27-02-2012 £40 for the skim and test fecking upholsterers not in today so I'll see him tommorrow bud Re: Head skimming - Niall - 27-02-2012 Jonny b Wrote:£40 for the skim and test fecking upholsterers not in today so I'll see him tommorrow budNice one Jonny. I'm going to phone aroun and see where's cheapest Re: Head skimming - Niall - 27-02-2012 Ive been quoted 30 quid plus vat to do it. Dropping it there on sat unless Jonny comes up with something. If so thats a cracking price Re: Head skimming - Niall - 27-02-2012 Connor Wrote:NiallHarper Wrote:Ive been quoted 30 quid plus vat to do it. Dropping it there on sat unless Jonny comes up with something. Yeah. He wanted to charge me 80 at first and started saying the HG could of gone until I made it clear I knew what I was on about and it was already stripped down to the bare block! Re: Head skimming - Foxy-jim - 27-02-2012 I love it when they tr and talk crap to you! Makes me laugh. Re: Head skimming - Niall - 27-02-2012 Foxy-jim Wrote:I love it when they tr and talk crap to you! Makes me laugh. Wernt having any of it. Seemed like a alright bloke though when he realised I wernt some noob Re: Head skimming - Foxy-jim - 27-02-2012 The guy at my garage does the same to me. Can wait to let him in on the whole brake thing I said about the other day! Head skimming - Matt - 27-02-2012 Hopefully picking my new head up on Wednesday, so I'll strip mine down. See if I can get it cheaper. Niall how much did you remove? I actually haven't had a look at the head yet so dont know why I'm taking off lol Re: Head skimming - Niall - 27-02-2012 Stripped it right down. All that's left in there is the valve guides. Re: Head skimming - 4WayDiablo - 28-02-2012 You can skim my head any day of the week niall! Re: Head skimming - Ruan - 28-02-2012 With skimming, you want to remove as little as possible, just really to remove the crap on the face and make sure it's 100% flat... Make sure you get a proper multi layer steel gasket, don't bother with those motorfactors fibre shit... It'll last about 30 seconds... And if the surface of the head isn't flat, with an MLS gasket, it'll definitely pop the gasket quick, or even not seal, they can be a bit funny about sealing at times... Speak to your engineering place and ask them to get you a proper Elring or Victor Reinz or similar Multi Layer Steel gasket, they'll also advise you on how many notches, knowing how much they took off the head to return it to standard, or you can leave it and have a slight increase in CR, or decrease with the HG - up to you... Don't accept no substitutes ![]() Re: Head skimming - Niall - 28-02-2012 Ruan Wrote:With skimming, you want to remove as little as possible, just really to remove the crap on the face and make sure it's 100% flat... Cheers Ruan. Any idea what the original Peugeot HGs are? I've just ordered one of them. Don't mind getting rid for a different one as I payed bugger all for it anyway ![]() Re: Head skimming - Ruan - 28-02-2012 Should be a MLS... You can easily tell, one feels like it's made from cardboard, one feels like it's made from sheets of metal with sticky black stuff on it... I'm sure you can tell which ones which ![]() Re: Head skimming - Niall - 28-02-2012 Ruan Wrote:Should be a MLS... Sure I will when it turns up haha. |
