Heat Wrap Q's - Grant - 13-06-2013

How much would i need to to a '6 manifold?

Also;

I am thinking of doing my whole system, but;
a) How would this hold up over time picking up shit from the road? Could it be a fire risk?
b) would there be dangerous heat spots on the ends of the boxes where I cannot wrap? I.e where the box meets the pipe?

Thanks

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - cully - 13-06-2013

if your car is likely to leak oil onto the wrapping Dont do this!

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - cully - 13-06-2013

my garage m8 was flagged down on a test drive case the heat wrap was on fire in the car he was driving
had to empty the rally car handheld extingisher on it to save the car

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Grant - 13-06-2013

Do you know where about on the system it caught fire?

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - cully - 13-06-2013

it was a subaru manafold hot pipe to turbo

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Grant - 13-06-2013

Ah i see.

I have no oil on my system as it is, so cannot see why it would want to eat oil all of a sudden?

haha thats a stupid thing to say. Thats like saying "why would my car ever break down? It hasnt yet!"
Parts wear!
Problem is, get oil on a bare manifold, it smokes and burns off almost straight away. get it on heat wrap, it soaks in, stays hot and eventually catches fire.

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - HDIkyle - 13-06-2013

I wrapped my entire system on the estate as it was full of holes. Never had a problem with that. Also my GTI manifold and cat and that was fine

It's not the manifold I was questioning. The question was how would oil get onto te system, manifold -back. That would have to be a hell of a leak!
I'm fully aware of the risks of wrapping the manifold. Especially with this engines.
I just couldn't see how oil would get that far down the system?

What like mine when i first got it? Literally everything under my car was covered in PAS fluid lol

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Ruan - 14-06-2013

Personally wouldn't bother, the temperature the manifold will get to with the wrap on underneath is unbelievable, you put more heat load on the cylinder head, as the manifold acts like a massive heatsink.

Unless you've got _problems_ with underbonnet temperatures, I really would just leave it alone, apart from Rally situations and where people have mounted turbochargers etc in the engine bay, I've never seen it be of help, just contribute to cracking the absolute SHIT out of manifolds because they really aren't designed for the sort of temperatures you'll get with a wrapped mani.

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Grant - 14-06-2013

The main logic behind my thinking is my concern of the water pipes near the mani. I have out a 6 exhaust mani on my xsi.

I suppose wrapping the water pipes would be a better option?

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - swampy - 14-06-2013

If you do wrap the manifold use the proper high temp silicone sealant on it afterwards

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Niall - 14-06-2013

Or just fit the 6 water pipes then you don't have to wrap anything!

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Grant - 14-06-2013

I have the '6 water pipes already and they touch if not held out of the way...

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Niall - 14-06-2013

Then something isn't right. Alternatively, buy some heater hose and clip it out of the way.

I'm thinking thermostat housing. Are they different XSI-GTi6?

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Niall - 14-06-2013

Don't think so. Think the only difference is where the metal waterpipe at the back of the block runs.

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Grant - 14-06-2013

Did you by any chance cut the pipes for the matrix I got from you?

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Ruan - 14-06-2013

If needs must, wrap the coolant pipes in heat wrap... It does things in both directions Wink

The wrap should be sprayed with high temp silicone spray once it is fitted!!

This helps to stop water and oil getting in to the material

Sounds like Niall. I've hear rumours he swings both directions...

I did not know this, thanks! Smile

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - swampy - 14-06-2013

Not many people bother doing it which is why the wrap doesn't last long

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Piggy - 14-06-2013

just use heat shield material on the oil/water lines you are concerned by.

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - samass - 25-06-2013

Ooh ooh I have that water thingy that you need!

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - Grant - 25-06-2013

What the pipe on the rear of the block? That was yours and now is in my garage? lol

RE: Heat Wrap Q's - samass - 25-06-2013

Yes, but no, there's another bit, on the Xsi block, its a plastic junction thingy, on th gti, its ally and a different shape. Now I just have to remember where I put it...
