Cheers man, found this online
http://wiki.seloc.org/a/VVC_Information

VVC Failure Modes

ECT Sensor low/error limits to 6K RPM

MAP Sensor error limits to 6K RPM

VVC Oil Temp Sensor low/error limits to 6K RPM

VVC Solenoid low resistance (should be 6.6 to 8.8 Ohms) limits to 5.5K RPM

ECU VVC control circuit fried (from wrong battery polarity) limits to 5.5K RPM

Cam Position Sensor limits to 5.5K RPM (The VVC CPS is NSC000010 variable reluctance, different to the standard K16 Hall effect)

Sadly I'm not getting any rpm limitations :/

Damn that's pricey, hoping it's not that then since have seen many vvc's in scrapys
also is the rocket cover gasket reusable? I hear its metal and provided its in good nick can be used again. Just want to know before I dissemble the top and find the gasket is no good to put back on

Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Jonny b - 20-10-2013

Steve if I was you I would get someone that knows theses engines to make sure ιts timed correctly first, then go down the vvc route! My mate ( builds engines for a living) ιs adamant that if ιts timed correctly then ιts a vvc issue, they don't always throw up a rev limit code

I've seen it be pikey'd by skimming without removing valves before - seen that countless times - not to mention did they even skim the head or just stick a new gasket on...

We're assuming that this has been done properly here! LOL!

At last someone that gets my point!!! Yay

Also the increased compression also points the fact the heads been skimmed, ιts not that much though apparently, whether they done ιt pikey or properly, if timings right then vvc ιs out

i bought an engine that was supposedly a good strong sweet runner on its orginal head gasket,
the engine wasn't in the car not even two weeks, when it died on tick over! the car only moved from one part of the drive to the other.
i got a mate of a mate to check it over, and he checked the timing and compression. all were ok, then he managed to bump start it and there was the nasty clatter,
he said some things been f*cked with inside, as that's bad timing, so the head has to come off.
when we got around to removing the rocker cover, we clocked the vvc pick up,
( what i posted in the link brass like part ) had a massive chip out of it, where the head bolt had been forced in,
so that proved that theory that it had been incorrectly timed in the past, then we clocked one of the head bolts, that had been chewed up badly, to the point where you couldn't get a socket on the end.
that was enough to throw the engine as scrap.
god knows what they had done to make it run sweet, proberly glued something.
fuckin £500 quid out of pocket! i got 20 quid f*ck scrap!
if i get the chance to meet the seller again, i will kick his fuckin head right in!
i have reused mine, and had no bother, but try not get it dirty etc. i will be replacing mine when i change the rocker cover.

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Poodle - 21-10-2013

Csb... :p

As Jonny says, just get it to a specialist man, I don't think a bunch of 306 addicts are going to be able to solve it. lol

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Arron - 21-10-2013

Steve... if your in bradford take it to that garage that fixed your lasses saxo. His dad is a rover/mg enthusiast so he may know what the issue is and as you know hes quite reasonably priced.

Fair play for wanting to get to the bottom of the issue tho... id just put it down to my own diagnosis... wornroverengine or summat or other id call it

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - lolsteve - 21-10-2013

Yea I think I'll be taking it to Maxted to get the work done, as you say Arron they are quite reasonably priced Smile
Just want to diagnose the problem first so I can tell them what to get sorted so they're not wasting time trying to find the cause costing me even more $$
Hoping the rain clears up in a bit so I can get the rocker cover off, see if anything under their shouts out as being wrong i.e the vvc pickup

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Midnightclub - 21-10-2013

Have you had it plugged into anything yet.. ie. code reader etc..?

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - lolsteve - 21-10-2013

Yep plugged in no codes. Which is annoying because a code would at least tell me where it's going wrong

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Midnightclub - 21-10-2013

Got anything like torque? That should allow you to at least see what sensors are producing, then you should be able to check that against whats 'normal'

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - lolsteve - 21-10-2013

I did have it, then removed it for some reason then when I try and use blackmart version it opens then closes after like 5 seconds :/
got the Bluetooth adapter though

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Midnightclub - 21-10-2013

It's because they patched the 'cracked' version.. basically if it connects to the net it says its fake and closes it after 5 secs, use the older version and it works fine.. found out for myself! Can mail you the old version if you can't find it.. think v1.6 is the one that works

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - lolsteve - 21-10-2013

Ahh makes sense, could you mail me you're working version. Not too keen on trying to download from web since some sites seem a little...unrepuatble

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Midnightclub - 21-10-2013

Yeah no worries mate, PM me your email addy and i'll send it when i get home

Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - devils_fuel - 21-10-2013

Steve has you tried resetting the ecu by leaving the battery disconnected for an hour or so, it probably won't help but then again it's a rover so anythings possible lol

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - lolsteve - 21-10-2013

Haven't tried that yet, I'll give it a go tomorrow. Can't hurt to try Smile

Took the rocket cover off today as well as the timing belt covers. Got plenty of photos. Was loads of silicone sealant all over the place, peeled it off since bits of it looked like it was going in the oil. Lost a bolt for the rocker cover too which is most annoying hoping it doesn't let much oil out until I get a replacement

id have to try and get some photos of my vvc timing, so you can check it over,

Cheers man Smile

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - lolsteve - 23-10-2013

Considering heat wrapping the manifold for some engine bay bling and the 1 bhp it might give.
Ordered some shell helix oil for a swap out of the tracked tripple qx. Think the engine deserves a treat

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - procta - 23-10-2013

I am hoping the weathers ok so I can get some photos for you steve, as I have few things to do with the car tomorrow.

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Tom - 23-10-2013

Steve i gotta ask, dont you wish you had just bought a 6?

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Dum-Dum - 24-10-2013

Mate dont mod it further to mask the issue, get it fixed and working as it should before playing.

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - Poodle - 24-10-2013

That's a bit rich coming from you isn't it?? :p

Still think it's going to be cheaper/better all round to swap a good turbo lump in myself, everybody needs boost!

Cheers man, weathers looking pretty good here so hope it's the same for you
(23-10-2013, 11:24 PM)Tom Wrote: Steve i gotta ask, dont you wish you had just bought a 6?
yes & no. a 6 would probably have been less work to sort out and have bhp etc but I sold the hdi because I was getting somewhat bored of the 306 along with my desire for rpm. They're a nice enough car but I just got bored of the interior and it's layout and fancied something a bit different.

Well an oil swap won't do any harm, the current stuff was cheapest of the cheap and has been given track and hill climb abuse. But the manifold wrap just gives me something to do and stops me bidding on janspeed manifolds/sports cats lol

If it comes to it and I know my current block is good then in time I'd be interested in a vvc turbo mix see what can come of it. but for now vvc is good enough to beat the 6...I hope

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - lolsteve - 24-10-2013

My £1.20 "xenon" bulbs arrived today all the way from china lol nice compliment to the smd sidelights.
No doubt will blow soon but carrying the spares around. And before anyone asks didn't touch the glass part

RE: Project Beat a GTi6 (140bhp & wobbly torque) - procta - 24-10-2013

I have had a f*ck on with the car, so I couldn't get the chance to have a look today for you.
