heater problem - 318d4n - 11-05-2013

I have a 1999 1.6 meridan, a few months ago the heater stopped working, the fan doesnt work and the temperature doesnt change wherever the dial is turned to. it was stuck on hot for about a month, i left work and noticed it was working so because it was a hot day i turned it to cold, it worked for about 5 minutes and stopped again. I've tried replacing the heater control unit just being hopeful really. the wires are all connected and the one on the thermostat housing is connected. at the same time the heater packed up the radiator fan came on all the time. i pulled the connector off to check the pins and put it back on, now the radiator fan doesnt come on ( don't know if it does when its hot because i haven't been out in it yet ). anybody have any ideas, tried looking in the Haynes manual but it doesnt really help.

When the heater was stuck on full it ran at about 90 but now it runs at about 75-80. It used to run at 70 before it all started packing up
