Classic car - Willo - 17-03-2013

I'm looking for a classic car as a 2nd/toy. I can't decide what to look for so come on guys can you give me some suggestions. I will have £1000; must be 1978 or older, and can be restoration but not a complete rust bucket

RE: Classic car - Fooby - 17-03-2013

Austin A35 / Austin Sprite.

RE: Classic car - ozonehostile - 17-03-2013

mini.

the absolute most fun you can have on 4 wheels, easy to work on, parts are cheap, epic to drive.

ive had loads so far and recently bought another 2 as projects that im building up to full rally spec to use in competition

only issue is tyres are becoming expensive/hard to get but if only occasional use, providing you dont let them perish they should last ages!

Plus hard to find one that isn't a complete wreck for a grand..

RE: Classic car - ozonehostile - 17-03-2013

tyres arnt that much of an issue, i buy them at shows, get pretty big club discounts from the people trading mini tyres too Smile

although saying that, on the rally mini im gonna have all sorts of fun trying to find 205/45/r13 performance tyres :/

dicky makes a good point, for a mint mini be prepared to spend 3k plus, but you can get a decent one for under £1500, aslong as you get one with a nice solid shell anything else is a doddle to fix

RE: Classic car - Willo - 17-03-2013

I'm not fussed if it has to sit on stands and have some work done tbh

RE: Classic car - Pete - 17-03-2013

Truimph Herald? Morris Minor? Not sure what money these do though, Might be able to get a project for 1k...Maybe an old MG of some sort too?

RE: Classic car - ozonehostile - 17-03-2013

old mg's rot faster than you can weld them back together and all the cool triumphs are way out of your budget Sad

Re: Classic car - floz123 - 17-03-2013

I had a mini a few years ago and I must agree...they are possibly the most fun you can have on 4 wheels. They go round corners like they are on rails. Only issue I found is that the parts don't last long...especially wheel bearings if you plan on fitting fat wheels. I've got a Capri at the moment and absolutely love it...gets looks everywhere it goes and good for some tail fun ;-)

RE: Classic car - Shea - 17-03-2013

your gunna find it hard to get something decint for 1k that doesnt need quite a bit of work to it :/

RE: Classic car - Pete - 17-03-2013

RE: Classic car - ozonehostile - 17-03-2013

ive always thought an old vauxhall like a victor would be a cool project, just that i bet getting parts for them is pretty much impossible Sad

i would also love a hillman imp, space frame chassis and motorbike engine Big Grin

RE: Classic car - Willo - 17-03-2013

Morris minor v8 sounds fun

RE: Classic car - D@wson - 17-03-2013

Ford Pop and stick in a Small Block Ford V8

RE: Classic car - bingham123456 - 17-03-2013

Vw beetle? All of them iv had were rust buckets and in total i spent 1000-1500 on everything for each car. That includes buying the car aswell.

Im hopein to get a ford anglia in the near future. Been wanting one for ages got a fiew ideas for one. Nice wide arches lowerd and a roof chop hopefully

RE: Classic car - ozonehostile - 17-03-2013

vw beetles are my least favorite car in the world ever. ford anglia would be awesome though Smile

RE: Classic car - samass - 17-03-2013

f*cking Nazi Hitler wagons hateful heaps of shit

RE: Classic car - bingham123456 - 18-03-2013

mine woz and still is the best cars iv owned super reliable with the right upgrades. Droped by 30-40 mm and it handles like a dream. Could get my 74 beetle sideways round most bends and it woz only a 1300cc

But still each to ther own i suppose

RE: Classic car - 1616six - 18-03-2013

Sit up & beg pop..

RE: Classic car - Piggy - 18-03-2013

Mini ftw

you can buy decent shells with a few boxes of parts for 1k

get one with a decent shell n subframes rather than awesome wheels/engine etc as those bits can be fixed and sorted easily

RE: Classic car - Marcus1991 - 18-03-2013

3 door Range Rover Classic,

RE: Classic car - ozonehostile - 18-03-2013

Phase 1 306 s16, definatly a future classic.

My vote would definatly be a mini, but also how about a 205? Their eligible for classic car insurance now, nearly as epic to drive as a mini

RE: Classic car - procta - 18-03-2013

i wouldn't buy a mini, to many about plus they are a common classic too, not to mention they are getting well expencive for parts, plus getting a decent shell for 1k is questionable too! a lot of bodged ones out there. my aunt had a two. she got shot of her carbed mini 35 that was a soild shell. for a injection based one, that had been tarted up. when my cousins boyfriend came to do some bodywork on it. he found that the shell was full of filler! he said it was a right night mere. why not look at a ford fiesta mk1 or an capri? or even a tina. bit of old school ford is better than a common mini.
i was offered a tina mk5 estate 8 years ago, for 500 quid! mint con aswell, if you look at the prices now. 2.5k id have made a 2k profit. shame i didn't have the cash or space at the time!

RE: Classic car - RJDubya - 18-03-2013

Doubt you'll get 1 for a grand but Reliant Scimitar GT like this would be ace!!

RE: Classic car - Willo - 18-03-2013

I'm leaning towards

Morris minor
Mgb gt
Ford Anglia
Ford cortina
Poss mk1 fiesta
Mk1/2 escort
Triumph herald
Triumph dolomite

That all I can think of at moment

RE: Classic car - RJDubya - 18-03-2013

The MGB and Moggie Minor i can vouch for parts being cheap(ish) deffo cheaper on the moggie... Both are plentiful and have loads of club following so a great support network. I'm sure fords and triumphs will have the same but have no experience of them.

you will never ever be able to get even a rotten mk1/2 escort shell for a grand, they are mega money these days lol
