16 year old with a five vehicle history! - AlexCarter - 09-02-2013 Alright fellas! I'm Alex, I'm 16 and from North Cambridgeshire, but moving to Portsmouth in the Summer. I've had three field/mess around with cars and one drift car. Here are some pictures of the beasts The first, which I got when I was 13. A 1.5 derv 106. Then I got this, which was going to become my first car but it was rotten as heck and unbelievably slooooooow. Then I was given this from the mother after she'd finished using it for a few months, turned it into a field car and ragged the guts off of it for two years. Never filled it up once or ever cared for it, and only let me down once when my mate's little brother had a go and popped the rad. -.- Then I decided to go and do something worthwhile and fun, £330 I had this. and did some of this: Did three drift days with it and it never missed a beat. Only sold it after I blew a hole in the gearbox and shattered the clutch. 170hp 323 E36! That's all I've had, currently poodling around on a bloody 50cc twist and go moped. Simply because needs must and I need to get around for various reasons, but as soon as I turn 17 in September I'm moving up to four wheels! Question is of what... Here are the insurance quotes I've been getting. 306 HDi: £2800 " 1.9 DTurbo: £2400 106 Quiksilver: £2300 106 1.1: £2200 Think on balance I'll be going for the XUD 306, but we shall see! That's enough for me, cheers guys! RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - WiNgNuTz - 09-02-2013 XUD FTMFW! /thread RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - bigcheez2k3 - 09-02-2013 Welcome. I second getting the XUD, £200 more than a 1.1 106 is worth it. RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - AlexCarter - 09-02-2013 The 306 field car was an XUD, and that was completely standard with a Lucas pump and TMIC, and by christ did it shift! The only problem I have is raising the £2400, insurance for 17 year olds is daylight robbery... RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - Eeyore - 09-02-2013 XUD obviously. RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - Pompey306mark - 09-02-2013 Welcome. Where you moving to in portsmouth? Also XUD is best, and good to see they are still raping people on insurance. All depends on where Mum and her boyfriend get their jobs located. Got my interview for Highbury college in the next few weeks, gonna study Level 2 Motor Vehicle Maintenance! RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - THE_Liam - 09-02-2013 Ha, reminds me of myself at your age, spending a year learning to weld on a seriously rotten 1600 Capri. When I passed my test it turned out the insurance was £5300, so I chopped it in and bought a Fiat Uno, and still paid £1800! If it makes you feel any better, it does get cheaper, I got quoted £315 for a 190E today, but it has taken 8 years... RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - Toms306 - 09-02-2013 Christ, I didn't even know which pedal was which till I was 17!! 1.9 xud is what you wanna go for though. HE ADMITS IT!!! 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - kentiiboii - 09-02-2013 Tbh I tried xud and hdi. IMO I think hdi more responsive. Xud is easier to diagnose and repair. Xud is better on veg than hdi. But I just like my hdis less work involved to tune. I'm a computer person so if rather get me computer out than get my tools out. RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - puggyhdi - 09-02-2013 Welcome along RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - Poodle - 09-02-2013 I've had both, but am actually the complete reverse of Kent. XUD is more responsive and easier to tune. HDi is easier to diagnose and repair (admittedly mainly thanks to knowledge of electronic trickery) and better on fuel. Either way, looks like you'll be set for looking after them properly, plenty of practice there! 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - kentiiboii - 09-02-2013 (09-02-2013, 11:46 PM)Poodle Wrote: I've had both, but am actually the complete reverse of Kent. They're both very similar to be fair. I think it easy because I'm a computer technician so it's easy to load a map. But then the rest is same as xud. But with xud you gotta get fuel and boost right. Hdi is better on fuel. But as said dturbo better on "veg". 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - Sambarker - 10-02-2013 If your handy with the spanners, get a pre 1990 205/309 and put an xud in it. Then you can insure it for much less on a classic policy 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - Stephen - 10-02-2013 Do you not have to be over a certain age to get a classic policy? 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - Sambarker - 10-02-2013 No idea RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - Toms306 - 10-02-2013 (09-02-2013, 11:07 PM)THE_Liam Wrote:(09-02-2013, 11:04 PM)Toms306 Wrote: 1.9 xud is what you wanna go for though. Well if the only other options are HDi or 106 its not a difficult decision lol. I'd never buy one myself though. RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - ozonehostile - 10-02-2013 yeah you have to be minimum of 21 for classic policy's. welcome along anyway mate, xud ftw. RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - ginge191 - 10-02-2013 Welcome along! Portsmouth you say; will be also moving to Southsea from may with the mrs and her brother. Give us a bell if you're around; there'll be a gti6 and 2, 1.9 205's hanging about it the garage! Nice lot of cars though RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - THE_Liam - 10-02-2013 (10-02-2013, 08:34 AM)ozonehostile Wrote: yeah you have to be minimum of 21 for classic policy's. welcome along anyway mate, xud ftw. It's usually 25 mate, I've only just become eligible for it... RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - AlexCarter - 10-02-2013 Thanks for the welcomes guys. If it wasn't for the fact I'm probably going to be doing a lot of miles in my first year, I would have gone for something petrol. But having already owned an XUD and having read about how they can be tuned and modified, it seems like the better choice! (10-02-2013, 09:03 AM)ginge191 Wrote: Welcome along! Thanks mate! Though for first car i'd go 1.5d 106, luckily for me the insurance in southampton was cheap enough to start on a hdi £1100 in first year with no ncb 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - AlexCarter - 10-02-2013 (10-02-2013, 01:09 PM)maxlee Wrote: welcome mate i know this is the wrong forum for this advice but have a look at insurance on a bmw e36 compact been running through insurance for the girl friend and it's still cheaper for hwer to insure the compacted over any peugeot Tried a 316 compact mate and it was a solid 4k still, was worth a try though! I may be wrong but I haven't checked in a while. Even if the 306 was slightly more I'd rather have it since it's more torquey and about the same on fuel economy. Trouble with me is I have such a heavy right foot so I'd never manage what you're getting haha. RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - HDIkyle - 12-02-2013 TBH i would consider the 106. Our lass had a 1.1 106 and it was such a good car to throw around i want one myself. It did have a 1.4 engine fitted not long after we got it but still a bloody good laugh. Much more fun than a 306 to drive as with no anti roll bars and 13" wheels you dont need to be going at any speed at all to get it sliding on corners and there awesomly light! Diesel is better tho just for the record. 106 with XUD on RE: 16 year old with a five vehicle history! - AlexCarter - 12-02-2013 (12-02-2013, 06:27 PM)HDIkyle Wrote: TBH i would consider the 106. Hmm Still reckon I'll go with the 306, not got the tools nor knowledge to do the above swap, and I think I'd be disappointed with the lack of guts of a 1.1 106! In the meantime, I've done the typical bloke thing of buying car bits without having a car to put them on... All that's left to do is remove the stupid ghey stickers and the crap they leave behind, and give it a good polish! Can't knock it for the price I paid for it! |
