It's not as hard as you think mate, even if they are Valeo's which (apparently) are harder to split (common myth).

Follow the guide and take your time with them.......patience is the key!

Re: Valeo black mask guide! - ohara - 29-05-2013

Can you use a electric fan oven ?

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - Oil-burner - 29-05-2013

Yes but adjust the time and temperature accordingly.
Fan ovens get very hot very fast!

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - scottbmxer - 12-06-2013

Somehow I just broke my mums oven doing this :\

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - gareth7 - 13-06-2013

^ Opps.......I bet you're popular with your mum at the moment then lol

I've jus split apart another set or the new estate I just bought, really didn't wanna budge but got there in the end. Maybe try a bit hotter next time?

What paint do most people go for? Last set I used simoniz satin black but didn't look as good as the set I have on my gti-6 :/.

Matt work best or satin or even gloss?

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - Piggy - 14-08-2013

Cossack grey and laquer for the win. mine look ace.

top tip...dont wait for them to cool to remove the old sealant...it goes like concrete!!

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - Rich306 - 14-08-2013

Heat gun works best IMO, and the paint I use is Halfrauds gloss black

Valeo black mask guide! - ArmzSC6 - 14-08-2013

Was thinking I may use ford graphite grey as that's what the wheels will be so should match well. Won't lacquer them though so shoul stay flat not to glossy.

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - Oil-burner - 14-08-2013

I just used some plasticoat graphite from wilkos.
Again I didnt lacquer them so they stayed matty!

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - calibra306 - 15-08-2013

Ive done loads of sets ive sold via gti forum and in my fan assisted oven I stick it on 80 and leave in for a good 20mins and they come apart very easy!

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - gareth7 - 15-08-2013

I use my fan oven too but not for that long!!

10-12 mins at 80 degress does the job nicely

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - Piggy - 15-08-2013

my almost brand new fan oven at 50c needed 20min

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - gareth7 - 15-08-2013

that's cos you only had the oven at 50 degrees mate Wink

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - Piggy - 15-08-2013

yeah but I didnt fancy melting the things...and correction actually I did it at 65

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - gareth7 - 15-08-2013

melting a set would get me painfully killed by her indoors Wink

wasn't there someone who asked if this could be done in a microwave a while back lol

Valeo black mask guide! - ArmzSC6 - 16-08-2013

I've found some come apart easy enough others are absolute c**ts! Didn't have enough graphite grey kicking about so I've gone for mat black as the last set I did in satin don't look nearly as good. I've done gloss before but have found anything matt looks better once the lense is over.

Good guide was easier than i thought it was going to be

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - mcglynn - 18-10-2013

sorry to bump an old thread! BUT, has anyone done these in colour code? Kinda thinking diablo, or would they look tacky?

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - gareth7 - 19-10-2013

I made a moonstone set for a customer about a year ago........

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - Poodle - 19-10-2013

Colour coding is difficult, as once the lense is on the colour looks different, so even if you get the colour match spot on it still doesn't look right. Seem to remember someone tried it with their diablo quite recently, can't remember who though, maybe grant..?

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - mcglynn - 19-10-2013

Hmm fair enough, do blacks look well on diablo?

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - gareth7 - 19-10-2013

they do......or a gun metal grey/anthracite

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - mcglynn - 19-10-2013

Thinking of going ford graphite grey, same colour ill be doiny my wheels!

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - Rich306 - 19-10-2013

I did a set in Astor for Justsean

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - E_KEL95 - 14-12-2013

Anyone any photos of these on a black 306, toying with the idea but not sure how it'd look

What way did you do the rears?

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - gareth7 - 07-01-2014

with tint spray

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - Rich306 - 07-01-2014

Only put a thin layer on buddy? You start hiding the lights too much and it's illegal.

RE: Valeo black mask guide! - gareth7 - 08-01-2014

I put three thin coats on mine, lights are still very visible during the day and no issues with MOT.

One thing I would say is make sure the lights are absolutely spotless before using tint spray......ie wipe them with thinners then rinse with water. The spray reacts very easily to any traces of contaminants.
