Right, im going out on a limb with this one. Not suggesting it because of tuning potential or ultimate power but the best engine ive had extensive experience of is the Hyundai/Kia D4FB. 126hp 1.6, enough power for general day to day driving, can do 80mpg if you try (and 50 without trying), cheap tax. I did 85k on one and it just would not die. And anyone that knows how i treat company cars knows thats saying something

1.9 PD? Tuning wise they make good power, pretty resilient and fairly easy to work on.
Newer german stuff can fk right off though

Which part of the PD is resilient? Not the camshaft, lifters, turbo or DMF anyway.
They are easy to work on though, far easier than a HDi, and torquey as f*ck as well!!

Alfa / fiat / vaux 1.9 Mjet motors are absolute cack, ever tried taking the injectors out? lady garden, that is all.
PD engines are chocolate shite.
How about the 2.0 DCi175 motor? mines been bombproof and i haven't heard any other horror stories. Beautiful smooth engine and the addition of twin balancer shafts over the DCi150 Motor makes it so much smoother & refined! rarely need to go above 2k rpm

any modern engine will have its inherent flaws, can't argue that some will make silly power, or live a very long life IF looked after properly.
DMF is not part of the engine, its transmission and a consumable part.

Okay the cam/lift problem is a bit sucky but all engines have a flaw, and poor servicing by owners in the mindset of "its German so it's reliable/doesn't need looking after" probably doesn't help.
I imagine half the turbo issues are user created similar in how XUD throw rods or possbibly done by bad maps asking for too much boost.

Terrifyingly unreliable!
The M9R suffers from loads of issues, timing chains (which they say are 'for life'...), shit DPF, injector issues as they're early generation piezo and then always seize like f*ck on the way out, horrifically heavy rotating mass from the balancer shafts - same issue as the 2.2HDi there, so they're REALLY slow to rev.

Tbh if it's got a renault badge on it just avoid it like the plague. There are no other manufacturers that produce consistently awful diesel engines, but renault manages it without fail. Don't get me started on the 1.9! Tbf i haven't seen a lot of problems with the 2.0 yet, perhaps they've finally cracked it, i won't hold out hope though lol.

I know its not a diesel but I really enjoyed my renault F7P. The electrics were utterly horrendous but the engine itself was great
My volvo B200 feels very diesel-y .... does that count. A few of them have done a million miles, makes an XUD look short lived
Other than that i have nothing to add to this discussion. Ford endura 1.8, 2.0 8v HDi, bmw 3.0, merc om604/6. Basically anything ive liked has already been mentioned other than the 1.5DCi, we abused and neglected the poor old clio and it didnt give a shit, between that and the DV6 it seems like most of the cars in the country have them now
