after I had my condenser replaced, I whipped the bumper off and fitted a strip of ally mesh (painted black) behind the grille. no more damage since.

Both my 306's have working air con.
My hatchback as had two condensers in it's 320k miles life so far.
Even the dog shit estate has working ac, I just replaced the rotten old condenser.
It's the salt off the roads in the winter that rots them out. I use to spray water in the grills to try and flush out the salt when washing the cars but it still rots out behind a relay box that between the fans at the top.
The salt also rots the two bottom pipes where the P clips are.
