Re: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 11-06-2012

OMG its only an update

inspired by strictly-derv's progress in getting a turbo on here viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2680

I set about getting a plate made up for the T25

Frist off a completely inaccurate template was drawn up, turbo manifold is drawn on at wrong angle, but I fixed this later when drilling the holes.

12mm steel

a mixture of plasma cutter and hole drilling to cut it out - apparently the plasma 40 doesn't really like cutting 12mm and blew a few fuses.

Tapping holes for studs

Sitting at the right angle

Rotated both housings to get angles right and to get oil drain pointing downwards, next to a k14 for angle comparison. The cir clip that holds on the cold side is menacing and should not be attempted with 3 screwdrivers with eyeballs in close proximity, so the right tool for the job was found.

Relocated the actuator by drilling some more holes in the cold side for the bracket to sit where it has too now its been rotated.

Now need to make a plate for the exhaust elbow.

The hot side exit on the T25 doesn't have a flat mating surface, its bevelled - so not sure atm how its going to seal against a plate. Any suggestions?

Re: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 13-06-2012

Exhaust elbow plate made up and actuator relocated and bolted up

Pretty much ready to go on now, jut need to sort an oil feed line out as had a k14 not a T2.

Will be next weeks mission, am I right in thinking the high pressure feed block connector is none standard and people are taking in the the rigid hose and having it made up to flexi?

Re: Silver ZX Volcane - Ruan - 13-06-2012

You can bend the original to fit if you want... But if I were you, pop down to your local hydraulics place, give them the hose and get a compression fitting on it with some flexi between.

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 20-06-2012

Got the T25 on today Big Grin

Pretty exciting, goes pretty well.

Temp sits a bit higher now though :/

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 20-06-2012

pic of the turbo going in >

and then with correct 90 degree bend in for oil feed

Also running de-filtered atm as doen't have the right size silicone to go on the T25 - sounds like it'll suck in small children from the pavement.

Running standard-ish pump atm (need to shim the governor for a start) and currently building up an 11mm hybrid to go in.

Lag is quite laggy, you have to rev the crap out of it to get on full boost.

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 22-06-2012

Changed the rad today - look what came out :o

Temps sitting much more reasonable now Smile

Also shimmed the governor whilst I was under the bonnet, pulls up the higher rpms now

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 27-06-2012

Finding life with the T25 a bit different

Really comes in late compared to the K14 (around 3.3k) and although Ive shimmed the governor, its running out of puff by just over 4K

So the power band is tiny atm

Going to shim it a bit more and see if it will keep boosting past 4K, but still worrying about the lack of advance at this point on the standard pump and wherever its flowing enough fuel at the higher rpms.

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 27-08-2012

Got a sudden change in engine noise, sounded like an exhaust leak from downpipe.

Luckily I was only down the road, so got back and stripped down to find a bolt missing from the turbo hotside clamp and another getting loose!

Doesn't seem to be any serious damage, could have been a lot worse. Looking pretty sooty now though.

I'm sure I double checked these after clocking it, but they're done up super tight now.

Also took the opportunity drill and tap the turbo to fit the egt gauge sensor

Just have to get it wired up now

Turbo isn't boosting past 20psi now, so must be a slight leak somewhere when I put it all back together :/

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - strictly_perv - 28-08-2012

Good work. Mine only gets full boost at 3,400rpm. Best get the gov lever shimmed some more to make the most of the turbo.
I don't know what sort of power your expecting but the standard 9mm pump can cope very well, mine made 168bhp on the dyno, with clutch slip, boost leaks and no fans to cool the I.C plus the pumps far from maxxed out.

Not at all sure what to expect really, at the moment it isn't going particularly much better than the high boosted k14 I've got on the other zx, but haven't got it set up properly yet, boost starts dropping at about 4k just when the turbo should be getting going (assume fuel / gov issue) and I haven't modded the dynamic advance yet either to go with the high rpms.

What psi are you running?

Still haven't tracked down the boost leak or why it isn't boosting past 20psi - fmic is all up tight, will have to check the fanimolds are done up tight too but the engine was too hot to reach down the back.

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 06-09-2012

Adventures in pump modding episode #69

Modding the lda pin housing to get some more travel - now standing at 6mm ish - don't know what it was originally, but reckon I've got 1/2mm more out of it

Might go harder or extend the actual lever length so it gives more throw and more movement onto the leverset

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - tim 306td - 16-09-2012

any updates on this mate?

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 19-09-2012

Nothing major, waiting to get a TD04 on, just haven't had the time.

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 21-09-2012

More pump nonsense

although not sure which car this'll end up on now :/

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - Jenkosowls - 21-09-2012

interesting any precise amount youve removed or are you just going down a trial and error route was looking to do something simular but dint want to ruin the piston

Re: Silver ZX Volcane - Dan! - 21-09-2012

Have you got a transit cap on the front of the pump?

Upside down cold start mech on the front for fitting purposes, transit cover on the back to allow more travel in.

Dave reckons I won't see anything from having a more retarded starting position as initial pump pressure will move it beyond that anyway - but perhaps if I lower case pressure to suit...

Thing is without a test bench how the fudge am I supposed to set it up anyway, can prob get some stock book figures of what its supposed to be set to, but would be helpful if I could measure how much the piston is moving at given ipp? Might take it down to a diesel specialist when its built up and see if they'll run it on their bench depending on price.

The way I've filed it down, no need to shim the spring as haven't affected the seat, just allowed the piston more travel. It now allows full advance travel, compressed spring length isn't enough to stop it. So hopefully will retain stock response. actually maybe i should shim the spring to take up the difference made by spacing out the other end Phew

Could have used a spacer to space out the end cap by same amount, but much easier to trim the piston than get something machined up, seal it and then shim the springs to suit.

Limiting factor now is slot in the case, but given the clearance with the governor wheel and cage I'm not going for this yet. I also think that with full travel, will be enough for advance up to 5k ish anyway.

Anyway, waiting on bits from the hydraulics shop now so I can get my ipp gauge installed. Then with any luck I'll get this on.

This happened today

Got the TD04 on using plates made by CJ_Derv

Needed a bit of faffing to get them on, drill here, tap that, file this, grind the other, but all in much neater job than the plates I've made myself, which have been rough to say the least - the last pair I made I didn't even trim, just left them as squares :p

Only took it round the block, but I'm pretty impressed, will have a proper play tomorrow.

IPP gauge has arrived too, so hopefully get the pump I've been building on this soon.

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 29-09-2012

IPP gauge feed drilled and tapped.

Reckon the pump is now ready to go back together now and get fitted.

RE: Silver ZX Volcane - zx_volcane - 07-12-2012

It lives!

After being parked up most of the summer, I've been going round getting it ready for an MOT.

Forgot how well it drives!

Hopefully get a ticket for it tomorrow.

Might turn back into my daily while I'm doing the engine swap on the black one.

cheers man, not all engine mods have worked out, but at least I can keep track of what I've tried Wink

Now with added clutch slip, should help with the Mids Meet and the RR (naaaaaaaaaat)
