Golf GTI 16V was heavy and soft with less power, Astra GSI had a crap chassis and had lost the red top, Escort RS2000 was crap in every way, Honda Civic VTI was ugly, Almera GTI was ugly, Renault 19 16v wouldn't handle, Fiat Bravo HGT would eat it's gearbox or understeer into a hedge. Closest thing was either a 145 Cloverleaf that wasn't as fast or an EK9 Type R which wasn't available here. Surprised there aren't more '6s around really. Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - Frosty - 11-01-2014 One think people also forget is that the d turbo had pretty good performance at the time. In like 1995, 90bhp for a diesel was a fair bit but people now compare then to the 130/150 bhp vags etc RE: Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - ozonehostile - 18-01-2014 everyone I speak to at work or whatever when they notice im driving a dturbo always say "i used to have one of these when they were new, or my brother bought one of these"..... always followed by "went like stink!" which makes you think, how terrible must other cars have been around 94-97 ish if so many people remember dturbos as been a properly quick car? and like what liam said, why didn't they sell more gti6? Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - Frosty - 18-01-2014 Yeah I know what you mean. I'm sure there ain't many people out there that haven't driven a Xud powered Peugeot/Citroen at some point in there life RE: Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - THE_Liam - 18-01-2014 They were the first diesel to be properly popular over here, and at one point the BX TD was the fastest diesel sold in the UK... This was something my old workmate said when he first got in my DT for a lift home, apparently he had one as a company car, and spent most of his time hooning up and down motorways in it. He was also very taken aback by how well mine went when i gave it some stick. ![]() RE: Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - Niall - 18-01-2014 (18-01-2014, 10:57 AM)ozonehostile Wrote: and like what liam said, why didn't they sell more gti6? Look at modern day equivalents. Meganes for example. You see shit loads of the basic ones on the road but how many R26s do you see? Not many. Same goes for all hot hatches at the moment and probably will for a while. If you think, the GTi was as near as 20k new which could by you a boring motorway cruiser but with loads more spec (and probably a VAG tax ![]() RE: Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - Toms306 - 18-01-2014 Tbh, people will often think their first/early cars were quick... I still remember my 1.8 as being quick....but if I got in one now I'm pretty sure it'd feel stupidly slow, but then I also don't remember quite how clunky/rattly/bumpy 306s are until getting back in one... That said, it's also surprising how 'slow' sportier cars were in the early 90's....was watching a programme the other day where they were talking about an old 2.5 petrol Porsche with a top speed of.....140mph.....my diesel Golf passed that figure with ease 10 years later!! ![]() As for selling more 6's, I'm also kinda surprised they didn't as well....tax was the same as any car over 1.5l (most of them!) at the time, and fuel wasn't exactly expensive.... And after reading the 2000 sales brochure up there, I'm amazed anyone bought DTurbo HDi's.....was cheaper to buy a Meridian estate with more space and better spec!! ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, as Niall said though, people just don't care about cars these days... I was having a lengthy chat with a 'nearly new' car dealer the other day (only wanted a quiet look round the forcourt! ![]() ![]() RE: Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - THE_Liam - 19-01-2014 The thing is that peoples perspective of performance is wrong these days with sporty cars. I remember talking to a mate of a mate about hot hatches, told him I'd driven an R26 and he was like "Was gonna get one of them but got a Focus RS because the Megane was slow as shit", and I couldn't understand that. He was calling a car that does 60 in just over 6 seconds slow because a Focus RS was slightly quicker. It's all a willy-waving contest these days. I mean how often do we race away from the lights? I don't, I can't be bothered risking my license! I'll go find an NSL back road and push my car there... I learnt when I had the Skoda that unless you want to risk yoyr license you can't push these cars on the road. The only time the 211bhp was any real use was overtaking. (18-01-2014, 10:57 AM)ozonehostile Wrote: and like what liam said, why didn't they sell more gti6?There were 18-19k brand new, which adjusting for inflation is 28.5k in today's pricing. It's not that they weren't good cars, its that they were actually pretty much the equivalent of going and buying a brand new Ford Focus RS. I'm sure lots of us here would like one of those but not if it means dropping 25-30k on it! They were a halo car. The top of the range one that boosts sales across the whole range and creates a positive brand image for the 306. RE: Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - hbomb1905 - 30-06-2014 Some of this material is brilliant! The XSi wheels from a few posts up are definitely steelies with wheel trims but I haven't seen one with them for years! I think the lazers were an optional extra on ph1 xsi's! RE: Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - Piggy - 30-06-2014 that 205 advert in the alps/snow makes me want one so bad...and makes me want it to snow at the same time!!!! RE: Old Peugeot adverts/pictures/brochures etc - DturboGaz - 10-07-2014 those wheels are not alloys, there plastic wheel trims.. back in the day the alloys were an optional extra...
