i did this the other day and turned the thing on with my arm next to it completely forgetting that the fan was on the floor and it took all the skin off my arm! LOL fail....

I find that dripping 3 in 1 oil onto the spindle and allowing it to lubricate the bearings prevents the motor from squeaking for a long time.

I spend up to 3 hours a day commuting in my car each working day, so the fan gets some hours on the clock and it still takes over a year to come back. Second application lasts longer than the first.

I tried it with no joy darren, pack it with grease, ran it, pack it with grease, ran it etcetc, still squeaks ffs!
