How the hell do you get the valve stem seals out?!

JUST about managed the exhaust side ones...an hour of sweating and blood.

The inlet ones just have no room to get anything down there and my usual specialist tool for valve stem seals isnt man enough it seems...even after cutting it some extra teeth/grooves

Huh
cut the steel band on them and they will come off easy Wink

They wont even come close to budging them...

Hence why I said so in first post.

What steel band?!?
oh, missed that sorry Big Grin got a pic of your ones?

I haven't got any but a 16vXU is a bloody faff itself, I've just used a good set of pliers to get hold of them, you do need a good grip though, and I do have reasonably strong hands from working as a mechanic for a while.
Yeah. My forearms are bigger than my biceps...mind thats not much to go on.
The special valve stem seal grips I have are bending i'm gripping so much. Pliers arent man enough.
My mini vicegrips just grip but leave .5mm movement left/right... Think patience is the tool here
Pretty sure mark got his out with just normal pliers. The 16v head is pretty tight for room but he managed it. I'm sure he will be along tomorrow to confirm.
They are total gits.

Heat gun gentle to warm them up and had a pair of pliers to catch hold of the seal tight and twist the seal clockwise and anti clockwise gently but firmly. Once seal has broken just start to pull up on it while working it left to right.

you'll need to clamp the head down or get someone to hold it as they're tight to the end.
Thanks chaps. Sometomes is just nice to know its not me being a pleb.
After another 20/30min on one with no joy... The grinder and old tools got it...

With that setup...got each one out in seconds!!

Fyi: inlets are trickier than exhausts to correct myself
