Full Version: ‘As new’ 1989 Peugeot 205 GTi to be auctioned; the estimate will likely astound

In 2014 in London, RM Sotheby’s sold a 1984 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 for £140,000 against a pre-sale guide of £60,000 to £95,000. That figure certainly seemed astounding for what essentially is a souped-up hatchback, but now a somewhat more ordinary example – a 1989 Peugeot 205 1.9-litre GTi is to be auctioned at The Silverstone Classic Sale on Sunday 31st July with an estimate of £18,000 to £22,000.

The interior is simply immaculate and in showroom condition

A one owner from new car and purchased and delivered on 8th May 1989 at a price of £10,001.93 from the A. J. Blackler Peugeot and Renault dealership of Torquay, Devon, the grey with red piping car has covered just 7,896 miles and was laid up between 2004 and 2012 in dry storage.

The 205 – registration F425 MFJ – offered is described by Silverstone Auctions as being in “exceptional condition” and features a cigarette lighter, an ash tray and rear seats that have never been used. Of it, the vendor adds:

“The vehicle looks, drives and smells as close to new as you would find. In other words, it as close as you would ever get to being able to walk into a Peugeot dealership in 2016 and purchase a brand new model of what is generally recognised as being the best hot hatch ever built”.

This ever-so-bold individual’s point will be proven right if the car sells for its upper reserve. The Bank of England’s inflation calculator tells us that the vehicle’s price new in 1989 is the equivalent of £22,446.57 today.

The boot shows no signs of wear-and-tear either

And finally, even the wheels are perfectly presented (though Silverstone note that new tyres will be required)

Yep... tidy original low mileage 205s with history are going for strong money these days.

Problem is that the knock on effect is that lower down the market people are thinking that tired shite is worth thousands and the price of spares is heading through the roof as well.

A far cry from how things were a few years back when values and parts availability was more like what 306s are today. A tidy low mileage and unmolested GTi6 or Rallye is probably a very smart buy I'd say

Exactly what I've been trying to tell people and why my Rallye resto is absolutely OEM.....
It won't get near the one that sold 2 years ago as the turbo 16 was far far far far rarer.
Wonder what my well used 205grd would have fetched now?
Cars that went- 5 Morris Minors, 4 Beetles including my 1962  6 volt  no fuel guage, modded up to 1600 twin port and weber carbs (Bye bye  Boy Racers).  Wolesley 1500 that the one with long bonnet.  Austin Somerset  which was old then and an amazing car. Twin Carb  Mk3 XR3.  3 309s and 2 306s. The XR3 was junk really even if tidy  and looked after. 306s -sound as a pound as we know.

"The car was always regarded as ridiculously fast for a sub 1-litre car and held the class C lap record for years at Castle Combe being first 1 l1-litrer to lap the Wiltshire circuit in under a minute and at an average speed of over 100mph."
Remember that time was set on the "old" Castle Combe circuit before the chicanes were added, so you can't compare it to modern times.

Either way, it's looks like a pretty potent bit of kit even now, let alone 30 years ago when it was built!

This is the way to go now with 306s, at the end of the day 306s are now like the 205s were 10 years ago. we have to start to change our ways now and try and keep the rare ones on the road, and start to save the rest.
£27.5k..........

Wow.
