What actually wears out in them?

I think I've only changed them once in the Dturbo and I didn't notice a difference in the ride or handling.

I'm guessing rubber deteriorates, steel in it starts rusting, threads get worn out etc.

Yes, I've replaced the bearings a couple of times.

Ones I bought from GSF years ago that I ended up returning the bearings didn't fit as tight in it and thought that wouldn't help with the handling.
